Reel Accessories Review

13 Fishing’s Trick Shop is Open for Customization (continued)

Price & Applications: While 13 Fishing has certainly made it easier to modify your reel to such a great extent than any other reel manufacturer to date, some of the upgrades are still best employed by anglers that are more comfortable with reel maintenance or enjoy tinkering. 13 Fishing has tried to make things as easy as possible by also adding online videos that walk anglers through the upgrades. Just a word of caution, if you do not approach the integration of the components carefully it is possible to damage your original reels.

Talk about details. The Trick Shop even has Line Guide Caps for $6.49 each

For example the first time we put together a test reel we used a screwdriver that was too large and ended up scratching both the reel and the anodized line cap. In another instance we almost lost the spring loaded audible clicker in the drag star when transferring the tiny component from the stock dragstar to the new brightly colored one.

Breaking down a Concept C reel for customization

For those anglers that want to change out “everything” 13 Fishing offers complete “Concept Reel Parts Kits” which retail for $84.99 each. These come with clever themed kits like the red, silver and blue “Patriot” kit, the red and black “Demon” kit and the hilariously named blinged out “Goldigger” kit.

Time to integrate the "Patriot" kit

Those anglers looking to mod their reel to a lesser extent can easily just change out a handle and matching spool and cast control knob and yet still have a reel that looks very personalized. An implementation like this will cost $29.99 for the handle assembly, $31.99 for the spool assembly and $7.99 for the matching cast control knob. All of this adds up to only $69.97 to put your very own signature look together.

Now that is a patriotic looking reel!

The Trick Shop idea is brilliant, it is not only fun and exciting for existing owners of 13 Fishing reels to be able to customize their reels but makes the Concept Series more desirable for anglers that haven’t even purchased one yet.

The colored components change the whole look and feel of the Concept C, giving it a lot of personality

Ratings: (We've re-calibrated our ratings standard for 2008 and have included a key at the bottom of the following matrix as a guide):

13 Fishing Trick Shop Concept Reel Parts Kits Ratings (?/10)

Construction/Quality Excellent construction exhibited on all the individual components. The colored anodizing on the components is high quality, and consistency among the different components is spot on 9
Performance All of the components in the kit focus on cosmetics more than performance. We are still testing the performance altering single components like the deep spool and carbon handle but overall when it comes to basic performance and durability everything has held up well 8.5
Price A reasonable price for all the individual components or the entire kit 8
Features Same basic features as the standard components but a very wide array of colors/patterns. For performance or application altering features the company has the carbon handle or deep spool options 8.5
Design (Ergonomics) When it comes to switching the components out it does require some smaller screwdrivers and the willingness to tinker. If you can maintain reels all of this will be a no-brainer for you. The fact that 13 Fishing has built additional tools like an online configurator and installation videos should help give anglers the confidence to trick out their reels 8
Application Designed for reel enthusiast the Trick Shop is just plain fun. While the carbon handle and deep spool options are a great start we would love to see more performance enhancing options 8

Pluses and Minuses:

                 Plus                                    Minus

+ A seriously cool idea, one of the first manufacturers to not just endorse reel modification but offer products that make it easy to do so - Does require some mechanical skills, but if you are used to reel maintenance this is a walk in the park
+ Options, like a ton of them! - Would love to see more components that not just alter cosmetics but performance as wel
+ It has never been easier to customize a reel and match it to any rod
+ Complete kits take out the guesswork and are also reasonably priced
+ Simply put.... the Trick Shop is a ton of fun for enthusiast anglers

Conclusion: It is hard to lump all the components together and provide a single score but the bottom line is that the Trick Shop rocks! Leave it to a young company like 13 Fishing to break the mold and straight up endorse reel modification, as well as make it easier than ever for anglers to customize their reels.

A look at the standard silver versus brushed silver spool options... talk about subtle options!

While there are already so many style choices the one thing we would love to see out of the Trick Shop is a few more performance enhancing options. While the carbon handle and deep spool assembly are a great start it would be absolutely awesome to see things like bearing upgrades or supertuned light spools made available for die-hard enthusiasts. One can only hope that the Trick Shop continues to expand their array of options in the future.

The "Trick Shop" is an innovative concept that makes it easier than ever to customize your reel

While we think most Concept E and Concept KP owners will likely leave their reels as-is, the more affordable Concept A and Concept C reels are the ideal blank canvas in which to let your imagination run wild for customization. We are thrilled that 13 Fishing didn’t just roll out a few component colors to test the market, but rather they committed to enthusiasts in a big way with just a massive release of different color options. Bottom line, the Trick Shop is open for business, and the customization combinations are endless, which equates to a whole lot of fun for anglers looking to “Trick” out their reels, and while the individual components are not necessarily innovative on their own, the 13 Fishing "Trick Shop" as a whole is a very innovative concept that enthusiasts are sure to appreciate.
