Lure Review

Trophy Bass Baits's Intriguing SGT Glide (continued)

Design/Ergonomics: I fished this bait a handful of times and managed just the one fish pictured at the end of this article. This is how it goes most of the time when fishing real big baits. Bites are often few and far between. Diving a bit deeper into the SGT Glide itself, I really like the soft plastic covering Trophy Bass Baits has employed on this bait. It gives the bait a good, realistic texture while also providing durability because it's essentially a hard bait.

The bait's soft plastic shell has some very nice detailing, but the paint is not as vibrant as I'd like for a bait at this price point

That soft plastic cover also makes it easier to apply scents. The only downside I see is eyes are not as vibrant as I'd like. Not sure if that makes a difference or not to the bass though. Also, once the plastic begins to tear, I'm not sure what options there are for repairing the bait or if you have to bite the bullet and purchase another.

The bait's fins are nicely articulated

One of the interesting design features of this bait is the way both halves are held together. Trophy Bass Baits is not using a typical hard bodied bait joint with screw eyes and pins. Instead, they are using a kevlar fabric glued internally to both sides and then shielded with that soft plastic covering. This gives the bait a silent joint making the bait more stealthy and natural than many of its competitors.

I outfitted my SGT Glide with Owner STX-45 ZoWire trebles

Of course, I did find it a little annoying the bait didn't come with hooks. Fortunately, I had some Owner, STX45 ZoWire hooks on hand and was able to outfit the bait with those hooks. I only had #1s, so I used them for both the front and back hook.

Rigged and ready

Price & Application: Trophy Bass Baits's SGT Glide is available in four different colors and will set you back a cool $100 if you're game. As far as we know, it is only available in a slow sink configuration.

Pluses and Minuses:

Plus

Minus
+ Intriguing design with the soft plastic shell - No stock hooks
+ Kevlar joint is a nice touch - The color/paint job on our trout was kind of meh
+ Sinks in a neutral body position
+ Good gliding action
+ Several rigging options from which to choose

Conclusion: Baits like Trophy Bass Baits's SGT Glide once defined the big, swimbait experience. Small production run baits, hand made in someone's garage or backyard shack. While these baits still feed a good portion of the market, there's a lot more, viable competition from larger scale manufacturers all over the world today than there was ten years ago. So while the SGT Glide is a very worthy bait that I enjoy fishing, I have less tolerance for little things like cloudy eyes, a not very vibrant paint job, no stock hooks, than I once did - especially at this bait's price point.

Not a monster, but I'll take it. Any fish on a legit big bait brings a smile to my face. Thank you Trophy Bass Baits

What I really enjoy about this bait are the multiple rigging options, soft plastic shell, kevlar joint, neutral body position during the descent, good, side to side swimming motion - really all the important things. I just want Trophy Bass Baits to take this bait to the next level and up their game with the other little things and make this bait something that will feed my big bait, enthusiast soul.
