Introduction: Each year at ICAST, “Best of Show” awards are handed out in a multitude of different categories.  These categories range from simple tackle management, to an overall “Best of Show” award spotlighting one special product that stands out above all.  At this year's 2012 ICAST show in Orlando, Wright & McGill's new Sabalos saltwater fly reel took home top honors in the fly reel category.  With input from noted saltwater angler Blair Wiggins, the Sabalos reels promise to be an impressive yet affordable package.

The reel stands proudly next to the New Product Showcase “Best Fly Fishing Reel” Award

Derived from lightweight and strong 6061 bar stock aluminum, these large arbor reels are offered in 3 sizes: a 7/8, 9/10, and 11/12.  The reels sport an attractive silver frame with a blue spool and feature generous porting to make them extremely lightweight. Not only are these reels built with lightness in mind, but they are also equipped with features that help them endure the rigors of saltwater fly fishing.  Both frame and spool are anodized to resist the harsh effects of a marine environment. Ball bearings are sealed, and a comfortable yet durable aluminum handle provides a strong, sure grip.

The reel is heavily ported to reduce weight

The Sabalos reels features a cork/teflon composite dual core drag surface that is fully sealed to prevent water and sediment intrusion.  The drag is built with guts to beat a big fish too.  In fact, the 11/12 size exudes nearly 20lbs of drag pressure at full lock!  Drag adjustments are easy with the large drag knob on the back of the frame.
