Gear with Grit : Hodgman's New H5 Storm Suit

Date: 7/17/17
Location: Orlando, FL
Admission: Buyers & Press Only
Manufacturer: Hodgman
Reviewer: Cal

Introduction: When it's in the high 90's with 90% humidity outside, like it was in Orlando during ICAST 2017, it's difficult to look at a storm suit let alone think about one. What does help is when we see a new introduction that's well thought out and attractive to wear. Hodgman did just that this year with their new H5 Storm Suit.

Hodgman's new H5 Storm Suit is a complete system.

It's a Full System : Some suits are just shells that you pull over your garment and have to figure out how to layer, some of the other new suits we've seen this year are all integrated with insulation. The H5 suit by Hodgman is actually 4 separate pieces that are designed to fit seamlessly together yet still function individually if you decide to wear them solo.

It starts, of course, with the shell.

Jacket : It all starts with the attractive digital camo and solid colored jacket made of V-TecH windproof and breathable material. It features chest pockets, d-rings at the waist, and a protective hood with a protective flap to shield your face from the wind. The H5 Storm Jacket will retail for $299.95.

Then the bib pants.

Bib : The H5 Bib follows suit with the jacket in terms of styling and features a full length zipper in front, gusseted knees for mobility and a zippered thigh pocket for tools or the all important cell phone. The suspenders are adjustable of course, and there are waist straps for a more snug fit. The H5 Bib will also retail for $299.95.

This mid layer jacket is stylish enough to wear as an outer layer when it's not storming.

Core INS Jacket : The Core INS Jacket is designed as a standalone, insulated shell, but easily snaps into the H5 Jacket for those days you question why you're out on the water. It's made from Thinsulate Platinum moisture resistant insulation with a stretchable fleece lining at key spots for mobility. The outer fabric is quick drying it has secure, YKK zippered pockets at the chest and waist. The Core Jacket will retail for $129.99.

It's insulated with Thinsulate Platinum.

Core INS Pant : Just like the jacket, the Core INS Pant is designed to easily snap into the H5 Bib. It's built with the same Thinsulate Platinum insulation with Cordura panels on the hem, fleece lined stretch panels, internal knee and seat padding, and belt loops for an adjustable custom fit. The Core INS Pant will also retail for $129.99.

Both the core pant and jacket snap into the H5 jacket and bib.

The Women's Aesis new color caught our attention too.

Women's Aesis Shell: The Aesis Shell Jacket is not new for Hodgman, but they did show us a new color at ICAST. Formerly only available in charcoal grey, this women's shell made of 3 layer V-Tech fabric for water and wind protection is also breathable and features watertight cinch cuffs and micro-fleece lined hand warmer pockets. It has an attractive women's cut and retails for $229.95.

It goes well with this H3 Women's wader.

Hodgman is a Pure Fishing company and Andrew Wheeler was kind enough again to show us this product line.

Conclusion: The choices in weather protective garment for the angler today is a bit dizzying. It's also case in point evidence that competition is a good thing because it forces manufacturers to innovate or suffer the consequences. The new H5 Storm Suit with the optional mid-layer that can be worn as standalone is a fantastic looking and feeling suit that we look forward to adding to our review arsenal for the coming year.
