Introduction:
Spincast reels have the reputation of truly entry level equipment for those looking to sample the fun past time of fishing. The perception is, spincast reels are simply tools for children so they don't tangle their line while casting. Truth of the matter is, line management is so simple on these seemingly clunky little reels, many fisherpersons never give them up. Zebco has a long standing history in this market and we were lucky enough to see some of the very first product they brought to market with this concept.

This is the vey first spincast setup Zebco ever offered!

That first combo (top) was integrated into the handle so you could not take the reel off. The following year, Zebco corrected this with the bottom reel - same product, just separated from the rod's handle so you can purchase it separately for use on other fishing rods.

Other fishing rods you ask? Yes, serious fishermen use spincast equipment too. The tarpon shown in the picture to the left was caught on a spincast reel identical to the one held to the right.

Fast forward to today, and a very popular use for spincasting reels is in bow fishing!

Here is the original bow fishing reel from Zebco.

Zebco 808 & 888: Fast forward today and we see Zebco is still at it introducing a brand new 808 and 888 spincasters. Designed for species such as blue catfish and musky, the spools have been modified with a non-slip surface to make it easier for anglers to use braided line. The reels comes with 25 pound test line already spooled and retails for under $30.

Icon receives a PT facelift and is looking very refined for a $119.95 reel!

A good, mid-depth spool ensures good line capacity.

Conclusion: Spincasting is not just for children. As is evidenced in this little look back in the history of this product under the guidance of Zebco demonstrates, some serious fish can be caught on this so called, not so serious gear. Looking for an affordable setup? Don't overlook the manageability spincast equipment can provide in both your fishing line and your wallet.
