Introduction:
Ross Reels is easily one of the most popular fly reels around. While they may not be the “blingiest,” their performance and value has earned an impressive fan base over the years. We had a great time last year visiting the Ross booth and seeing their Animas reel for the first time, but this year they outdid themselves with the introductions of not one but two new reels!

The Eddy (left) and Rapid (right).

Eddy: Carrying a starting price tag of just $70, the Ross Eddy is a very affordable option for fly anglers looking for performance on a budget. Made with cast aluminum-alloy construction, the entire reel is coated in Ross' proprietary AGP coating for protection and long life. The spool is designed with a large arbor to facilitate quick line retrieval, while the maintenance-free Rulon drag is adjusted via a generous rear knob. Sizes include a 3/4, 5/6, and 7/8.

The Eddy and Rapid feature the same large easy-to-grab drag knobs.

Rapid: One step above the Eddy series are the extra-large-arbor Rapid reels. With attributes similar to the Eddy, this lineup is also cast from aluminum alloy and utilizes features like an oversized enclosed maintenance-free Rulon drag, reverse-taper Delrin handle, AGP coating, and a silent retrieve. Rapid reels come in either black or charcoal colors with 3/4, 5/6, and 7/8 sizes being offered. Look for a starting price of $100.

Both reels feature generous porting for weight reduction and reverse-taper handles.

Conclusion: Some models of the Eddy and Rapid reels are available now but all models won't be out until November. With such a proliferation of expensive reels on the market, it's always pleasing to see quality reels at affordable price points. As fly fishing continues to grow, products like these allow novice and experienced anglers on a budget to easily enjoy the sport without breaking the bank. If any of our TackleTour readers are searching for a quality reel with more-than-basic features, the Eddy and Rapid are two worth scoping out!
