Introduction:
Fly lines change at a rapid pace. Just when you think they can't get any better, companies come up with improved formulas and tapers to make them perform at an even higher level. As one of the “big” flyline companies, Cortland is constantly tinkering and listening to user feedback to stay on the cutting edge of fly line design. This year, Cortland showed us what they've come up with since we visited them at the last IFTD show!

Liquid Crystal Guide: These new 90-foot lines are made for fishing in hot, sticky tropical environments where tarpon, permit, and bones roam. Tailor-made for faster-action rods, Cortland designed the tapers to work effortlessly whether flicking out a quick short shot or double-hauling long. The PE+ coating is both hard and smooth and is fused to the monofilament core for zero line stretch. Choose from WF7F–WF12F weights at a price of $90 each.

444 Classic Big Shot: These lines use aggressive front tapers and are one size heavier to turn over the bulkiest of bugs. The multifilament core means less memory and less tangles. Offered in a light blue color scheme, these 90-foot floating lines range from 5–9 weight and will run $59.

The taper of the Big Shot lines turns over big flies and clumsy rigs.

444 Classic Modern Trout: Cortland designed these weight-forward floating lines to offer versatility for the average to advanced angler. The modern, precision taper allows for great performance with fast-action rods for casting everything from dries to nymphing rigs under indicators. Available in moss green or orange in weights 3–6, these 90-foot lines will retail for $59.

444 Classic lines sport a braided nylon multifilament core for easy line management.

444 Classic Tropic All Purpose: Made with a short front taper to load fast and turn over hefty flies, these lines tout a hard, smooth coating to remain user-friendly in sauna-like tropical environments. The multifilament core is made to allow for easy manipulation during any angling situation. Choose from WF5F–WF9F at a price of $59.

The 444 Classic Tropic All-Purpose is 90-feet long and is sand-colored.

Precision Finesse Trout II: The Finesse Trout line has been improved with a new heron/light blue color scheme and the stiffness has been turned up a notch. Made with a fine-diameter front taper and a hard running line jacket material, these lines are made to mend easily and excel when presenting tiny flies at long distances. These 90-foot lines range from WF2F–WF6F and cost $80 each.

Precision Big Fly lines boast short, powerful front tapers.

Other Improvements/Additions: Over the last year, Cortland was busy making other improvements and additions to other existing line families. Coldwater Blitz lines ($80) now feature a new 200-grain size; 100-foot-long Precision Big Fly lines ($80) add a 5-weight size into the mix; Precision Competition floating lines ($55) utilize a hard monofilament core and an available .022 level front taper; Trout Boss HTx lines ($80) now come equipped with a shorter front taper.

A huge thanks to Brooks Robinson and Chris Rotchford for their professional tour of all the new lines.

Conclusion: This year, Cortland celebrates their 100th anniversary. After not only seeing but using many of their products, it's easy to see why they've been around so many years. We are excited about what we saw from them at the IFTD show and can't wait to see what's in store next year. When shopping for a fly line the Cortland brand should always be on your list!
