Introduction: Perhaps the most innovative lure we saw at the show was a swimbait offering from a relatively new company called SpoolTek. What may appear to be a pretty straightforward swimbait is actually surprisingly feature rich.

Looks like a pretty unassuming swimbait right?

Fish can't see the leader, fish can't throw the hook: SpoolTek lures may look like a pretty unassuming swimbait but the "Fatty" and "Stretch" swimbaits have a secret, they each contain a concealed leader that deploys only after the strike occurs. This allows anglers to fish light leader or none at all and once a fish hits the bait the deployed leader allows the heavy lure section to be pulled in front which helps keep the fish pinned as it cannot use the weight if the lure to displace the hook during violent head shakes and ultimately is designed to improve the ratio of strikes versus landed fish.

After you land the fish resetting the lure is as easy as turning a dial on the side of the hard bodied head section and winding the leader back into place on the internal spool, readying the lure to be cast out once again.

The swimbait consists of a rugged ABS head, the integrated winding system, a black nickel O'Shaughnessy hook and a clever replaceable soft plastic tail. Each lure comes with an extra tail and switching them out is as easy as sliding the tail into the back of the ABS head front section via a key system.

Tails are quick and easy to change

This lure is designed to be fished in the complete gamut of applications including both fresh and saltwater. Since the leader is concealed anglers can user a much lighter leader or no leader at all enabling a much stealthier presentation. This more natural presentation can also potentially increase the number of strikes. Another benefit of the 80lb. stainless steel nylon coated cable is that it effectively eliminates cut offs from toothy species like Musky, Pike, Kingfish and even Sharks.

The hidden leader is the key feature in these baits but the company also made sure to design a swimbait that fishes well. The 6" "Fatty" is basically a shorter version of the 9" "Stretch," and both swimbaits are designed to be fished a variety of ways effectively, including straight retrieve, trolling, jigging, slow rolling, sight casting and even dredging.

The innovative SpoolTek lures are available now directly from the manufacturer's website, and the Fatty retails for $18.99 while the Stretch costs just a dollar more. Whether it is targeting largemouth bass in freshwater or Grouper in the Salt, SpoolTek's new swimbait might just be your new secret weapon.
