Introduction: It seems like everywhere you go, no matter what the sport, you see GoPro's bolted on the vehicles of outdoor enthusiasts. With a growing market that is extremely interested in documenting their outdoor adventures more and more companies are offering their take on the ideal outdoor camera. With Shimano's product offering in both cycling and fishing it was only a matter of time before the company introduced a HD sport camera, and this ICAST the CM-1000 was unveiled.

The CM-1000 is a new HD camera from Shimano designed for angling and cycling use

The Shimano CM-1000 is the first product to come out of the company's LSG (Lifestyle Gear Division) which is designed for use by both anglers and cyclists. The camera includes lens and image sensor technologies designed to capture brilliant HD movies and high-quality images in nearly every light condition.

A look at the retail packaging

Its F2.0 bright lens is designed to deliver excellent low-light performance while its 16MP back illuminated CMOS image sensor enables stunning 1080 pixel HD video. One of the coolest features is the self righting camera. The camera offers dual, standard angle 135-degree and super wide 180-degree modes, while a 90-degree increment auto image rotation allows users to flip the camera in multiple directions and still maintain a horizontal image plane.

One of the coolest features about this camera is the ability to self right the camera no matter how the housing rotates

Ease of use was also a primary factor in the CM-1000's design and through the use of Wi-Fi connectivity and smartphone controls – there’s a free custom iOS and Android app available – the CM-1000 allows for live views, video playback, remote adjustments to the camera settings, and shot framing. Unique to the camera is the use of ANT+ and ANT private wireless connections to transmit data from bicycle computers and other accessories.

The controls are simple enough but a connection to a smartphone app provides more intelligent integration

Compact in size – smaller than a deck of cards, the CM-1000 is out of the box waterproof down to 30-feet (10 meters). This depth meets the IPX-8 Waterproof Standard – the best rating for electronics experiencing continuous underwater use. The two-button design allows quick control of key functions while dual LED lights and audible cues identify settings.

So what comes in the box? The CM-1000 Sport Camera comes standard with the camera and lens cover, an adhesive mount and vented helmet mount, a USB cable and start up manual. The CM-1000 Sport Camera utilizes an iOS 6.0 and Android 4.2 app for use as a remote controller, angle monitor, a tool to change settings and video preview.

A look at the size of the new camera. Not bad for a HD 1080 sport camera and should be small enough to go wherever your angling adventures take you

Software for Windows 7 and Mac OS enables more comprehensive video editing, fish-eye view compensation, the display and integration of video and ANT+/ANT information to videos. Optional accessories include tool-free chest and hats mounts that extend the types of shots and applications you will be able to get with the CM-1000. The CM-1000's unveiling at ICAST was more than just a first look, it was a hard launch. The new camera retails for $299.99 each and is already available at retailers like Tackle Warehouse.
