Taking Home the Win with Savage Gear's Newest Bait

Introduction: Spend five minutes with Mads Grosell, the design guru at Savage Gear, and it is clear that his passion for lure design is fueling the forge of the company's innovation. Together with Okuma the team at Savage Gear has been on an absolute tear, and part of their winning formula is due to their strategy of introducing lures based on 3D scans of actual prey.

Mads shows us all three sizes of the new Version 2 3D Line Thru Swimbait

3D Line Thru Trout V2: We were so impressed with the 3D Line Thru swimbait that it took home three awards, the Best Value, Innovation and Editor's Choice. Not one to rest on their laurels the company is introducing an even further refined version this ICAST called the "3D Line Thru Version 2."

The sink rate is now labeled within the joint for easy identification

The Version 2 is now available in sizes all the way down to 6" as well as a giant version up to 12" for targeting giants. While the original model allowed anglers to rig a treble hook on top of the bait so the bait could slide up the line when the fish is hooked the new bait takes this design one step further.

There is now a "Y" channel inside the head of the bait so that the hook can now be rigged on either the bottom or top of the bait. Other refinements include a new more realistic eye design and the sink rate is now labeled inside the rear joint for easy identification without sacrificing realism. The new Ver 2. 6" will retail for $12.99 while the 12" bait will retail for $17.99, and all the new baits will be available around the October timeframe.

Mads rotates the 3D hard Eel's tail creating a wakebait

3D Hard Eel: Designed for taking on top of the food chain species like Musky and Pike the Savage Gear 3D hard Eel features a more durable hard bodied head section and replaceable tails.

A small tail gives the bait a side to side darting action on a twitch retrieve, while the larger straight tail allows the bait to be cranked back on straight or stop and go retrieves. Another interesting characteristic is the ability to flip the tail the 180 degrees which instantly transforms the bait into a surface wake bait.

This may look like a normal plastic worm but inside the hook area is a mesh for enhanced durability

3D Armor Crawler: Savage Gear is also introducing new worms including the 3D Armor Crawler which blends reality with durability. This worm is also based on the scan of an actual worm but the most interesting feature is that it is mesh infused in the hook area for increased durability.

This same design is also being carried over into the Armor Tube Worm which is a stick worm that infuses the center of the bait so that the lure stays on when fishing wacky. These worms are designed to impart genuine action and last through many more fish than your average plastic worm.

One of the coolest new baits at the show was the this amazingly detailed crab

3D Crab: Somewhat of a sleeper bait at ICAST the deceivingly simple 3D crab had everyone's attention at ICAST 2014 when it won Best of Show in the Soft Lure category. Most crab lures on the market are flat and barely look like the prey they are trying to imitate. The Savage gear 3D crab bucks that trend with a design based on a 3D scan of an actual crab and a shell that is placed above the leg section naturally. The claws are air filled so they exhibit action during the fall and look like the crab is protecting itself naturally at rest.

The jighead allows the bait to stand in a defensive position

The 3D Crab can be rigged a variety of ways but perhaps none is better than the company's own stand up jighead. This jighead has a large flat section that allows the bait to stand up in a defensive position when it hits the bottom and is available in 1/8 and 1/2 oz. sizes. These jigheads come 3 to a pack in the smaller 1/8oz. size and 2 to a pack in the larger 1/2oz. size. The 3D crabs are available in two materials TPE and PVC and two sizes, 2" and 4", and retail from $3.49 to $4.49 per pack depending on size.

Congratulations to Savage Gear for the win in the softbait lure category

Congratulations to the team at Savage Gear for taking home the win. When it comes to lifelike lures that display just the right amount or realism and lifelike action the Savage Gear offerings continue to impress by also staying affordable and within reach for everyday anglers. No longer are anglers just saying have you heard about Savage Gear, that popular lure company from Europe? Savage Gear has arrived, and it is no surprise that the brand is finding plenty of fans on both side of the pond.
