Douglas shows up to ICAST with impressive new rods

Introduction:
Douglas Outdoors may be a new company, but that sure didn't stop them from having a presence on both the ICAST and IFTD sides of the convention center. Although founder Jim Murphy has been a prominent force in fly fishing for quite some time, his company's latest foray includes rods for conventional anglers as well.

The reel seats have a very clean appearance.

DXC/DXS conventional and spin rods: Each DXC (casting) and DXS (spinning) rod from Douglas blends solid features into an attractive package. Douglas' intent was to create rods with a “ground breaking” strength-to-weight ratio. With this in mind, each one of the 40-ton blanks uses a proprietary X-Matrix construction process for enhanced strength, power, and sensitivity.

The X-Matrix logo and unique hook keeper....

Expect all models to utilize custom-tailored tapers, Fuji K-frame guides with Alconite inserts, Fuji reel seats (some featuring carbon fiber inserts), EVA grips, butt caps, and unique hook keeper designs. Fourteen casting models from 6-feet 8-inches to 9 feet will be offered, along with twelve spinning rods from 5-feet 9-inches to 9 feet. Expect to see these rods by December at prices ranging from $250.00 to $275.00.

Many of the rods are bass-friendly, including crankbait models.

The 9-foot spinning rod is advertised at just 4.2 ounces.

Thanks to John Boyle, Fred Contaoi, and Kyle McDonald for talking to us.

Conclusion: It's clear that Douglas is quite aggressive with the release of these rods. They are jumping into the conventional market by offering higher-end products and totally ignoring the entry level. Initial impressions were very promising, as the models we handled felt surprisingly balanced and crisp. How they fish is still yet to be determined, but we intend to find out before too long!
