Introduction:
California-based Abel Reels produces fly reels and accessories that are widely regarded as some of the finest in the entire world. While other companies produce premium fly reels, Abel takes things a step further and offers a variety of customizations and awesome custom paint choices. Of course, this really sparks an interest with us here at TackleTour and makes the brand that much more appealing. Before we visited Abel at the 2014 IFTD show, we learned that the owners of Abel, Mayfly Group LLC, have purchased Ross Reels in Montrose, CO. The brands will indeed keep their separate identities, however this purchase will allow both parties to work together to develop new items, refine production capabilities, and extend additional savings to dealers who wish to order both Ross and Abel products.

The Sealed Drag Series boasts 30 drag adjustments.

Sealed Drag Reels: We say goodbye to the Abel Quick Change and Creek reels, and say hello to a brand new series of sealed drag reels. After seeing so many sealed drag reels on the market, we were wondering when Abel was going to join the party! These newcomers will be available in three sizes.

These reels look much different than what we're used to from Abel.

Field tested for over two years, they boast quick change spools and sealed drag systems comprised of Rulon and aluminum. Abel Sealed Drag reels will ship out beginning this fall and will be offered at prices of $550 (4/5 model), $625 (5/6 model), and $675 (6/7 model).

Looking head-on reveals a narrow spool design.

Abel Zinger: These new zingers offer a great way of staying clutter-free and keep your accessories at the ready. They sport fully-machined aluminum housings and can be engraved with a custom logo. Color choices include olive, platinum, black, or satin black finishes. The fastener includes a hidden pin compartment as well as an “S” carabineer. The cord itself is a 36-inch-long spectra-nylon blend that boasts a 40-pound breaking strength. Look for these to start hitting shops by October at a price of $50.

The new zingers should be very useful for keeping accessories in check.

Grateful Dead Dancing Bears Edition Reel: Limited to just 250 reels, this awesome artistic masterpiece inspired by the Grateful Dead will be available solely on Super Series reels from sizes 4N to 11/12N at a $350 premium over standard black reels.

Nothing else on the market looks like this!

Several other new custom finishes are now available including the absolutely beautiful DeYoung Tarpon Flank.

Thanks to our friend Jeff Patterson for walking us through the new product lines.

Conclusion: Abel always has something new and fun to show off, and this year that didn't change. Sure, their gear commands a premium price, but you truly “get what you pay for” here. We love the fact that they not only make some of the finest stuff around, but they always manage to keep things hip and fun along the way!
