ICAST 2013 Coverage

A Classic is Reborn with Methods to Fenwick Madness

Date: 7/15/13
Location: Las Vegas, NV
Admission: Buyers & Press Only
Manufacturer: Fenwick
Reviewer: Cal

Introduction:
At one point in time, more than 30 years ago, Fenwick was the dominant rod manufacturer in the industry. In fact it was roughly 40 years ago when Fenwick introduced us to the very first graphite fishing rod, the HMG. This year at ICAST, Fenwick brings us a new HMG and some innovation for the travel weary angler.

Over 40 years ago, HMG was the very first graphite fishing rod.

HMG: When I think of Fenwick HMG, I'm reminded of simple graphics, refined but conservative design, and rods that feel balanced and powerful. The new HMG features understated graphics, full, rubberized composite cork grips subtly complimented by eva, and blanks finished with a reinforced carbon wrap. The finished product is refined, smart, balanced and surprisingly affordable at $100.

Fenwick updates the classic with a new Carbon Bound wrapped blank ...

One of the truly interesting features in the design of the rod's grips is the little notch towards the butt end the rod designed to deliver split grip leverage in a full grip design.

... modest handle designs ...

... and what appear to be quality guides.

There will be twenty three (23) different models including seventeen (17) spinning and six (6) casting models. Seven of the seventeen spinning rods are two piece models. Every rod in the series comes with titanium framed guides with deep pressed ceramic inserts and Fuji reel seats.

Zander is really liking how the new HMG rods have come together.

Methods: Unless their technique of choice is fly, rod options for the travel weary angler continue to remain few and far between. Fenwick submits their solution to this dilemma with a truly different and innovative design. Introducing the Methods travel rod, a series of two spinning and two casting solutions each affording their owner two different rod powers each with two different tapers depending upon how the final rod is assembled.

Tired of carrying multiple one piece rods while on travel? Fenwick offers their Methods to calm the madness.

One tube, five pieces, four different possibilities.

Catch that? Let's try it again. Provided in each travel tube of the four different models are five rod pieces - one handle section, two middle sections, and two tip sections. The two middle sections are where you decide how much power you want in the stick and the tip sections are where you decide the rod's taper.

Mix and match the middle section and top sections and build a rod to suit the conditions you're fishing.

Four different combinations in one travel tube affording you a flexibility no single, one piece rod can. Fenwick's Methods rods will retail for $150 each.

Each tube carries with it pieces to assemble the rod to suit your needs.

Wolbugger assists Casey Davidson with our requisite booth shot. Things are looking up for Fenwick and we couldn't be happier.

Conclusion: Today's rod market is flooded with options for anglers no matter the price point. In our recovering economy, the $100 price point category is perhaps the hottest. Fenwick once defined the bass rod market and with the retooling of their prestigious HMG line, they hope to regain some of that reputation and market share in the segment where consumers will notice it the most.
