Rod Review

The Surprising Fantasista Premier FNPS70-5 from Abu Garcia (continued)

Power: The FNPS70-5 demonstrated very good power to me out on the water and back in the lab, as you can see from the chart above, this was reinforced. Stacked against our two What the Finesse baseline rods, you can see how the FNPS70-5 starts off similar to the 2 power (medium) SMR822S-SP GLX from G.Loomis, showing a hair less deflection than that rod until about twelve ounces (12oz) of load. At that point, the FNPS70-5 shuts off and stiffens up almost jumping into another power classification as more load is applied.

Fig 1 : The chart above illustrates the deflection characteristics of our

Design & Ergonomics: Taking a more analytical look at that first "light and well balanced" impression this stick made with us, we can see the FNPS70-5 weighs in at four and a half ounces (4.5oz) but has a balancing torque number of 0.15. It's a little heavy for a medium powered spinning rod, but it really does have good balance which helps give the impression the rod is really light.

The rod's very useful hook keeper.

Guides are stainless steel frames with Zirconium inserts.

Price & Applications: Abu Garcia's Fantasista Premier line of bass rods are all priced at $299.99. The series sits below the top tier Fantasista Regista rods which retail for $499.95. Given the price difference, the Premier sticks seem like a really good deal in comparison.

The rod's blank is sanded and unfinished.

Overall the FNPS70-5 has a really nice combination of light, sensitive tip with a good, powerful backbone. It is an excellent choice for someone who prefers spinning gear over casting gear but who also likes to walk the line between finesse applications and more standard bait offerings.

If you're looking for a purely finesse stick in this lineup, you may consider the FNPS610-4. That stick is one power lower than this one and my guess is that rod will perform wonderfully in finesse applications.

The blank is crisp and sensitive - not two words I've come to associate in a blank rolled with 3M's Powerlux 500 resin.

Pluses and Minuses:

+ Light and well balanced - Guides are only SS framed, not titanium
+ Crisp, sensitive blank
+ Smooth power curve
+ Refined aesthetic

Conclusion: Every now and then placed in my hands is a piece of tackle that surprises me. Abu Garcia's Fantasista Premier FNPS70-5 is one such product. It's still difficult for me to shake the stigma of Abu Garcia focusing on more value driven fishing rods and I've yet to handle a Fantasista Regista stick, so to have a intermediate tier, flagship rod from them to fish is a very welcome reprieve.

What I appreciated most about the Abu Garcia's Fantasista is how light and balanced it felt in my hand from the get go. Then I looked closely and found an appreciation for its simple, yet refined aesthetic.

Abu Garcia has done a really nice job with this stick.

Out on the water, the FNPS70-5 continues to impress with its light, sensitive tip paired with a smooth, powerful backbone. The blank is crisp and sensitive - not two words I've come to associate in a blank rolled with 3M's Powerlux 500 resin, so the fact it has this resin system in its composition means it should be able to hold up to abuse. My only complaint about this stick is that it doesn't have guides with titanium frames, but that's only because I'm a component snob. Well done Abu Garcia. The FNPS70-5 is a very fine fishing tool.
