Introduction: Few tackle companies can point to four decades of
continuous growth in the highly competitive global fishing industry, but Okuma
is doing just that. This year, the tackle manufacturer officially celebrates its
40th anniversary, marking a journey that began in 1986 as a specialized
machining workshop in Taichung, Taiwan and evolved into a global fishing tackle
brand.

What's this? Okuma surprised us and other industry media
with a 40 Years Anniversary box
Four Decades: It takes both quality
products and time to build a reputable brand, and Okuma has done this through a
combination of manufacturing expertise, product innovation, and a commitment to
serving anglers across freshwater and saltwater markets worldwide.

There are not many reel manufacturers outside of
Japan that can claim ownership of both their R&D and manufacturing operations,
but Okuma has been doing just that since its earliest days. While maintaining
in-house development and production is far from inexpensive, it has given the
company the ability to rapidly prototype new designs, implement proprietary
technologies, and respond quickly to evolving angler demands.

40 Years is a long time in the
tackle industry
The result is a product lineup that stretches from
entry-level offerings to flagship models, all developed under the same roof. It
is a philosophy that has helped make Okuma a well-recognized brand, one that
continues to serve anglers across every segment of the sport.

Let's take a look at the 40 Years
Anniversary Reel
"Reflecting on four decades of growth, Okuma's
success has been built on a foundation of manufacturing excellence, a long-term
strategic vision, and an unwavering commitment to sustainable, responsible
growth over short-term gains," said Charles Chang, Chairman and Founder of Okuma
Fishing Tackle. "As we look ahead, we recognize the complexities of an evolving
global landscape, but remain confident in our direction."

The Okuma 40 Years Anniversary
reel features a similar form factor as the Inspira but with a very artistic
aesthetic and upgraded components
Okuma describes its history as one of perseverance
and self-challenge, overcoming technical barriers and competing against
established industry giants while remaining committed to building products under
its own brand. Having followed the company’s journey for more than two decades,
I've witnessed that dedication firsthand. In fact, during the early days of
TackleTour, Okuma became the first reel manufacturer to provide us with a reel
for review more than 25 years ago. Fast forward to today the team continues to
champion their latest reels and rods with the same enthusiasm and passion that
they displayed all those years ago. In an industry defined by constant change,
shifting trends, and evolving technologies, Okuma has benefited from a solid
team that has remained remarkably consistent and focused.

in at 8 ounces
To commemorate the milestone, Okuma is launching a
series of 40th Anniversary initiatives, including special corporate films
highlighting the company's evolution and the key principles that have guided its
growth throughout the years. For tackle enthusiasts, however, the biggest news
may be what is coming to ICAST 2026.Okuma has announced plans to unveil a
Limited Edition 40 Years Anniversary Commemorative Spinning Reel during the
ICAST show in Orlando this July.

The spool and handle are
beautifully anodized with a transition finish from teal to silver
The company says the reel draws inspiration from
the connection between anglers and water, featuring a distinctive design
intended to celebrate both the brand's heritage and passion for fishing. This
commemorative reel will serve as the centerpiece of Okuma's anniversary
celebration, and Okuma surprised us ahead of ICAST with an early look at the new
reel, shipping it in a commemorative presentation package complete with a
matching cap and water bottle.

The reel stem is painted to match
and features a wave finish versus a solid color. There are a lot of artistic
details in this reel that showcase the capabilities of Okuma's in-house design
and manufacturing
The 40th Anniversary Commemorative Spinning Reel
we received is a 3000-size model that shares its foundation with the popular
Inspira series. Familiar design cues include the distinctive sculpted stem and
aggressively ported rotor, but it's immediately apparent that this is no
standard production Inspira. From the upgraded components to the premium finish,
nearly every detail has been elevated.

A closer look at the machined and
anodized handle which features a ergonomic aluminum knob that looks and feels
high-end
The first thing that catches the eye is the
finish. The machined spool and handle feature a striking silver-to-teal anodized
fade, while the stem is painted to match and accented with an artistic wave
pattern that reflects the reel's water-inspired theme. Production is limited,
with an initial run of just 1,500 individually numbered reels. Each reel carries
its unique serial number engraved on the spool just below the line clip, adding
to its collectible appeal.

The spool is braid ready
Beneath the commemorative styling is proven
Inspira architecture. The reel is built around Okuma's Torsion Control Armor
(TCA) construction, utilizing a lightweight C-40X carbon fiber frame and rotor
to maximize rigidity while minimizing flex under load. The corrosion-resistant
platform is paired with an 8BB+1RB bearing system and a multi-disc drag capable
of delivering up to 18 pounds of smooth stopping power. Like the standard
Inspira, the Limited Edition features a sealed drag system topped with a genuine
carbon fiber drag cap, while the machined aluminum spool is braid-ready thanks
to an integrated rubber gasket.

The 40 Years frame and rotor are
constructed from carbon fiber
A fast 6.0:1 retrieve combines with Okuma's Flite
Shaft technology, which employs a hollow main shaft to reduce contact friction
and create a more direct connection between the handle and gearing. The result
is a retrieve that feels very smooth, lightweight, and responsive. One of my
favorite upgrades is the machined aluminum handle knob. It's a subtle touch, but
one that immediately gives the reel the appearance and feel of a premium
aftermarket upgrade while complementing the commemorative aesthetic.

Extending the carbon fiber theme
is the drag knob's cap
The 3000-size model tips the scales at an even 8
ounces and feels quite solid in hand. I really like how much fun Okuma is having
with their limited edition reels and the 40 Years Anniversary reel leans into
the artistic side of the company while also serving as a showcase for the
company’s excellent manufacturing capabilities.
Final pricing and availability are expected to be
announced during ICAST 2026.

Each 40 Years reel is limited and
numbered on the spool
Our Quick Take: There's something fitting
about Okuma celebrating its 40th anniversary by returning to its spinning reel
roots with the Limited Edition 40 Commemorative Reel. Over the years, we've seen
the company have some fun with special-edition spinning reels, including models
like the Chroma, GT, and Wave Off, and those releases have always stood out for
blending performance with personality.

Congratulations to Okuma on their
40 Year milestone! The commemorative reel is a great way to celebrate and
artistic and functional collectible for tackle enthusiasts
What has remained consistent throughout the years
is Okuma's belief that quality tackle should be both enjoyable and accessible.
While the LE40 is a numbered, limited-edition release, it continues that
tradition by offering anglers the opportunity to own a commemorative piece
without venturing into unobtainable collector territory. Congratulations on this
four decade milestone Okuma, and here's to many more years of bringing
accessible tackle to anglers pursuing everything from bass and trout to tuna and
tarpon in waters around the world.
