13 Fishing Launches Completely Revamped Spinning Lineup

Date: 7/21/22
Tackle Type: Reels
Manufacturer: 13 Fishing
Reviewer: Zander

Introduction: 13 Fishing launched a slew of new reels 24 hours ago at ICAST including completely new spinning reel platforms designed to significantly up the brand's game in both fresh and saltwater spinning. The new AL13, Axum, and Aerios spinning reels feature a number of proprietary 13 Fishing features and all come in under the $200 dollar price point.

13 Fishing has redesigned their spinning reels, starting with the saltwater oriented AL13

AL13: The AL13 is a brand new spinning platform for 13 Fishing and is designed to be a tank when it comes to durability. The emphasis on this new reel was to make it saltwater capable and the AL13 features an all aluminum construction, ceramic line roller, and sealed gearbox to better stand up to harsh environments.

The AL13 makes use of a new polymer drag system which doles out 16.5lbs of pressure (size 2 reel), and a whopping 44lbs of pressure on the largest size 6 reel

The AL13's sealed gearbox makes use of compression seals in the frame and all opening to better lock out water and contaminants. The AL13 also makes use of a new polymer drag material which is designed to be more durable and higher performing when it comes to dealing with pressure robbing heat.

The AL13 is sealed in the frame and rotor with compression gaskets to lock out moisture and debris

The AL13 will be available in sizes from 2 to 6 so they are certainly applicable for freshwater applications including bass fishing. Each reel comes loaded with 9 bearings and will retail from $170-$180 dollars depending on size. These reels will start become available from retailers right after ICAST.

The Aerios features a lot of new 13 Fishing technologies and comes with precision cut CNC aluminum gearing, a brass pinion gear, 9 bearings, and the new polymer drag system

Aerios: 13 Fishing went back to the drawing board to create the new Aerios spinning reel starting with use of Cast Iron Carbon material for both the frame and rotor. The new reel is designed to be smoother and more refined than all previous generation 13 Fishing spinning reels with a brand new precision cut CNC aluminum drive gear and brass pinion gear.

The Aerios looks so much better than the old Prototype X spinning reels

The reel also features 13 Fishing's "Glide Oscillation System" which is a ball bearing supported drive with multiple rail reinforcements for better isolation and more stable and smooth operation. This reel also gets the new polymer "Coolstop" drag system and will be available in sizes from 1 to 5. The smallest 1 sized reel weighs in at 8.29oz. and retails for only $135.00. The Aerios will also start shipping right after ICAST.

The Axum is the most aggressively priced of the new higher-end reels and makes use of Black Seal Saltwater bearings and a CZB under the ceramic line roller

Axum: Rounding out the new higher-end 13 Fishing spinning reels is the Axum, which features the same frame profile as the Aerios. The Axum features a similar carbon frame and rotor design but makes use of different bearings. The primary bearings are all Black Seal Saltwater ball bearings and under the ceramic line roller is one of the company's proprietary zero corrosion CZB bearings. The Axum also features the new polymer drag system, aluminum drive gear ands a brass pinion gear. Available in sizes 1 through 5 the Axum is the most aggressively priced of the new reels at $155-$165 dollars depending on size.

Our Quick Take: 13 Fishing was in need of a major spinning upgrade and the new reels look like they will offer a lot more performance and refinement, and are a lot more attractively styled. The Coolstop polymer drag system continues 13 Fishing's tradition of delivering some of the most powerful drags on the market and it will be interesting to see how they perform in the field. Perhaps most impressive is that 13 Fishing has made all three of these new reels available for less than $200 dollars. They didn't forget about value anglers either, and if these reels are still too expensive the new Source Series reels range from the ultra aggressive price of only $34.99-$44.99!
