TackleTour's Legion of SuperTTuned SuperReels: Enabled by Office ZPI (continued)

#3 Daiwa Alphas F: Another reel in my arsenal that didn't quite do it for me was the Daiwa Alphas F. Maybe it's because when I purchased the reel, it arrived with a scratch on the non-handed sideplate and the vendor in question was non-responsive to my questions of the reel's new, in box status. That is of course, until I filed negative feedback on their auction account. They finally replied but it was far too late to send the reel back. I had already used it. Such are the hazards of purchasing these items from that online auction house.

Pretty in pink!

My lowly, scarred Alphas F was actually the first reel that came to mind for customization after speaking with Tsuyoshi and Mayumi at ICAST. What better way to spice up this understated and unappreciated reel than to have it painted metallic pink! For a color match, I sent along the sideplate of my 2004 Custom TD-Z in this same color. Once returned, I replaced the stock spool with an I'ZE upgrade in gold, and swapped the stock, black rubberized cork knobs with the same product in natural. Total cost for this transformation? $255.

The Daiwa Alphas F never looked so hot!

Additional upgrades: I'ZE Gold Spool, SiC bearings, natural cork knobs.

#4 2004 Daiwa Custom TD-Z: But here's where the insanity goes a bit over the edge. What better way to gain inspiration for a team of custom colored and tuned super reels than to have a theme behind their purpose. In honor of the rumored, live action film about DC Comic Book's The Justice League, and of course, with the help of ZPI's new painting services, I've built an arsenal of reels inspired by some of the more popular superheroes from this team.

Cal's homage to the Justice League

First up? Some upgrades to my 2004 Custom TD-Z 103ML in metallic blue in honor of the man of steel himself, Superman. The key here was the introduction of some red which was accomplished by purchasing a ZPI RC-001S magnesium spool in this color and adding the dragstar from the aftermarket I'ZE Steez/Zillion handle kit. Since the dragstar is not available separately, I purchased the entire handle kit just to get the dragstar. Yes, I discarded the handle. Enthusiast obsessions know no bounds.

A 2004 Custom TDZ further customized in the spirit of Superman

Of course, to follow the dragstar's lines, I had to also install a swept handle on this super reel and since the one that came with the I'ZE Steez/Zillion handle kit was available, naturally, I continued to discard it and purchased an additional I'ZE swept CARBON handle instead. Insanity! The only thing missing now is the appropriate logo!

In pursuit of upgrade, obsess, and the TackleTour Enthusiast way.

Only thing missing? The Superman Logo!

#5 Daiwa Steez 103HL: Of course, where would the Man of Steel be without his Justice League counterpart, the Dark Knight? Ironically, while Batman is renowned for his resourcefulness, intelligence, and custom collection of specialty tools, the reel I chose to honor him only needed one upgrade. That's because the Daiwa Steez, with its stealthy grey appearance, is already superttuned out of the box and more than a worthy representative of the caped crusader.

Stealth is the name of the game with Batman

The only upgrade needed here was a more stealthy handle

#6 Daiwa Alphas: The last of the big three in world of DC Comic's Justice League is Wonder Woman. For this reel, I went back to the Daiwa Alphas and resurrected a reel that needed a cosmetic facelift. This particular reel had some battle scars on its finish and was a perfect candidate for ZPI's new services. Off to Japan this reel went only this time, one color would not suffice - it needed to be two (yellow sideplates and a silver frame).

Inspired by Wonder Woman

Once returned, the stock spool for this reel was replaced with an aftermarket I'ZE spool in red and the stock handle was replaced with a blue handle left over from my Daiwa Bay Casting Special. The result? A reel Wonder Woman might be proud to call her own. Total cost? $255.

Time for the golden lasso.. Sunline Machine Gun Cast anyone?
