Swimming Heads : Strike King's Red Eye Shad (continued)

Features: The Red Eye Shad is available in at least fifty four (54) different colors that span the bait spectrum of solid to ghost to chrome finishes. It is also available in either standard (noisy) or silent mode. The hooks are good and sharp, though thin diameter which probably aids in ripping the bait through the weeds.

The Red Eye Shad has some interesting contours like this bulging belly.

Design/Ergonomics: I only purchased two of these baits to try out, but both swim perfectly out of the package. I've little reason to believe this bait is not consistent from bait to bait. The half ounce size feels just right to me, but for those wanting options, the Red Eye Shad is also available in a smaller, one quarter (1/4) ounce size as well as a larger, three quarter (3/4) ounce size. Realism for this bait, if you enjoy the thought of using fish heads for bait, is actually better than some baits we've seen in this category and hook spacing is not an issue.

Pluses and Minuses:

Plus

Minus
+ Action as the bait falls through the water column is very good - Falls over when it hits the bottom. If this bait stood up on a deadstick, it wouldn't be fair.
+ Color selection is incredible
+ Priced right!

This is a fun bait to throw. I know it's not true, but it just feels like it moves faster than other lipless baits!

Conclusion: Given the choice, I'd much rather toss something big to catch fish. I can only think of one compact bait off hand, that I enjoy throwing a lot - that's the eighth (1/8th) ounce sized Luhr Jensen SpeedTrap. Well, that tiny little squarebill crank now has a colleague in arms in my tackle box. Maybe it's the fact it looks like a swimming fish head, or maybe it's that oversized eye staring at me, but whatever it is, the half ounce sized Strike King Red Eye Shad is really fun to throw and thoroughly confidence inspiring. Throw in the fact it's totally affordable and you have double crown award - Best Value and Editor's Choice!
