Rod Review

SPRO and Rojas Team Up Again to Further Your Frog Fishing Obsession (continued)

Sensitivity: Everyone knows, topwater fishing does not require a sensitive stick. As long as you can see your bait, you'll know if you have a hit or not. This is usually where I say that I cut the bait off and tied on a jig or soft plastic to test this characteristic, but we're talking about a frog rod here. Any angler that frequents the California Delta or other froggy waters knows, you do not cut that frog off and retie with a jig or soft plastic. It's just not done. If anything, you pull out another frog rod with a different color or one that pops instead of walks. Anyone who does anything else is not a serious frog fishermen. Fishing a frog is a mindset. It's serious, obsessive business. So no, I did not test how sensitive this stick might be. I fished the frog!

SPRO Bronzeye Frog SRBEYE-B72H Casting Rod against the historical averages of medium, medium heavy, and heavy powered bass rods we've tested over the past twenty plus years

Power: Now, there is one area where, with frog fishing, where feel comes into play. It's after the strike. Frog fishing requires the angler to calm their anxiety ridden, skittish, hook set pulls. When that strike comes, you need to pause for half a second to feel that tug before swinging to set the hook. It usually takes about half a dozen missed strikes to pound that into your head or just one or two giant blow ups. If you're fishing your frog over mats of vegetation, over half the time, when that strike comes the fish either misses the bait or pops it into the air.

SPRO's SRBEYE-B72H with 24oz of weight applied to the tip

On those occasions where the fish actually takes the bait into their mouth, you'll feel that pull and when you do, it is time to swing like you're swinging your titanium shafted driver at Top Golf. Only this graphite shafted fishing rod needs to respond in kind with enough give so as not to break and sufficient power to drive the hook points home and turn the fish's head toward you, and hopefully, open water. At the very least it needs to be able and pull the fish to the surface of the mat so you can ski it towards you. I'm happy to report, the B72H is up to this task.

Frog fishing on the CA Delta is an obsession

Design & Ergonomics: Let's be honest, SPRO's Bronzeye Frog SRBEYE-72H is not going to win any beauty contests or even attract very much attention. It's more of a rod built nextdoor in your neighbor's garage kind of aesthetic - and that's OK. It is simple, bare bones, light, a little tip heavy, but most important to frog fishermen, gets the job done. Frog fishing isn't pretty. It's a down and dirty, vegetation everywhere, mess up your boat, frustrate the hell out of you only to deliver the highest of highs (once in a while) type of deal. The B72H is not built with an aesthetic to distract from this self destructive journey. It is just there to support you - like your best fishing buddy eyeing that last Senko in your tackle bag.

SPRO uses Fuji's tried and true ECS reel seat on these rods with an EVA cap over the hood

Made in the USA

Price & Applications: SPRO's Bronzeye Frog SRBEYE-72H can probably handle other applications, but the only ones that come to mind are buzzbaits, topwater toads, topwater walkers or poppers. It is a 7'-2", heavy powered stick with a very limber tip making it a casting machine with very good power. Use that information as you will, I still haven't cut off my Bronzeye Frog 65 from this stick and probably never will. Retail is $260 which might seem up there, but considering it's built in the US and comes with SS/SiC guides by Fuji, it's really quite the value.

Th
e SRBEYE-B72H a serious frogging stick designed by a serious frog fisherman for others who share in or want to experience the obsession properly

Conclusion: After speaking with Dean Rojas about these sticks back in 2022, I fully expected them to hit the market in 2023. When they finally did arrive in 2025, I was anxious to fish the result. At first, I was decidedly underwhelmed (mostly due to the aesthetic), but the more I fished the stick, and the more frequent my bait was landing just where my eyes were looking, the more I came to appreciate the B72H's limber tip. This is a serious frogging stick designed by a serious frog fisherman for anglers who share in or want to experience the obsession properly. Let me tell you, frog fishing is an obsession and judging from the B72H, SPRO's new line of Bronzeye Frog Rods designed by Dean Rojas is a series you need to consider if you want a proper foundation for your frog fishing arsenal.
