Introduction: Shimano continues to distinguish its CoreSolid and Magnumlite spinning reels, expanding each lineup with models tailored for either precision lure control or sheer strength. The new Vanford FA reels further define what it means to be a Magnumlite series reel, incorporating refinements and performance upgrades over the previous generation.

Last season Shimano completely refreshed the Vanford Series, meet the new A (or FA) Series

Impressions (Magnumlite versus Coresolid): Gone are the days when Shimano's CI4+ workhorse reel was merely a Stradic variation. When Shimano first introduced the Vanford series, the name took some getting used to, but over time, it carved out its own identity as a go-to lightweight spinning reel, ideal for finesse applications and lighter lines. Now, the distinction between the two series is clearer than ever - Shimano has positioned the Vanford for enhanced handling and sensitivity, while the aluminum-based Stradic series prioritizes power and durability.

The New Vanford leans heavily into the Magnumlite design philosophy

Shimano classifies the Vanford as a “Magnumlite” series reel, a designation built around two key design principles. The first is minimizing rotational inertia, allowing for an exceptionally light start-up and stop of the rotor. The second is reducing overall reel weight, which further contributes to lower start-up inertia. This means that very little force is needed to begin or halt winding, making Magnumlite reels particularly well-suited for techniques requiring rapid, precise handle movements - such as finesse fishing.

In contrast reels like the Stella are designed with the Coresolid philosophy and prioritize strength and smooth power when reeling

In contrast, reels like the Stradic and Stella fall under Shimano’s “CoreSolid” philosophy, which focuses on two distinct performance attributes. The first is maximizing stiffness and rigidity, while the second is delivering a smooth, continuous rotation. CoreSolid reels achieve this through high-end materials and an optimized configuration designed to enhance durability and power transfer. Their rigid bodies resist flex under heavy loads, ensuring consistent performance even in high-pressure scenarios. While CoreSolid reels have higher start-up inertia - requiring more force to initiate rotation - they require minimal effort to maintain a steady retrieve. This makes them ideal for techniques that benefit from smooth, consistent winding, such as fishing with moving baits like blades, crankbaits, bladed jigs, spoons, and swimbaits.

Magnumlite reels prioritize light rotation and low overall reel weight

Design-wise, the new Vanford FA takes a significant visual leap over the previous generation, featuring cleaner lines and a polished finish that looks and feels more premium. It adopts the refined, angular aesthetics of Shimano’s higher-end reels, while the spool porting is more streamlined and minimalist in design, with vents designed to better resist water and debris intrusion.

Despite these modern updates, the Vanford FA stays true to its signature black finish, now with a more polished look and subtle red accents. The result is a reel that appears sleeker, more refined, and more modern. All of our editors agreed that the new reel not only looks better but also feels more premium in both fit and finish.

The Vanford now gets the Anti-Twist fin for better line management (it can be removed but cannot be re-inserted if you fish leaders with larger knots)
