Rod Review

Outlier by Design: Shimano’s Best Swimbait Rods Yet (continued)

Price and Applications: At $399.99, the Outlier rods are priced a little lower than I expected given their blank construction, premium Fuji components, and overall fit and finish. In today's high-end swimbait market, they represent a compelling value, especially considering the level of refinement Shimano has built into the series.

Whether using braided lines or braid to fluorocarbon leader setups the Outlier's Fuji Guides felt great and have held up well

More importantly, these are the first Shimano swimbait rods that I would confidently recommend to dedicated big bait anglers. That's saying something, because I've fished a number of Shimano and G.Loomis swimbait rods over the years, and the Outlier is my favorite of the bunch. Shimano has finally produced a purpose-built swimbait series that doesn't just compete in the category, it belongs near the top of it.

As for reel pairings, the Outlier balances beautifully with Shimano's Tranx and Conquest MD reels. Anglers looking for a more refined, lower-profile option should also take a close look at the JDM Antares MD DC, which proved to be an excellent match on the water.

If I could choose only one model from the lineup, it would be the 7'10". It occupies the sweet spot of the series, offering enough versatility to comfortably fish a wide range of swimbaits while still having the backbone to handle baits that push the upper end of its rated lure range when needed.

Out of curiosity, I asked Shimano's Sam which model was his personal favorite, and without hesitation he pointed to the very same rod. After fishing the lineup, it's easy to understand why.

If I could only have one Outlier rod it would be the 7'10" stick. This is also Sam Kennedy's favorite rod as well

“My personal favorite is the 7’10” Heavy +. It is super versatile and I love it for a K9, Hinkle Shad, Andromeda, tyrant 8 treble rig and 8” magdraft. It’s awesome for some of those key mid to large size glides and perfect for the treble rigged softies,” Sam explained.

If you are fishing smaller baits or want a swimbait rod with a faster action the 7'11" Outlier is a great choice. Together these two rods cover the vast majority of small to full sized swimbaits

One of the Outlier's greatest strengths is that it's more than just a single standout rod but rather it's a thoughtfully designed series. While each model shares the same quality construction and component package, every rod is tuned for specific swimbait sizes and presentations, allowing anglers to build a lineup around the techniques they fish most often.

The Outlier rods handle big baits and big fish with confidence and I could tell they were designed by enthusiasts that really understand how swimbait anglers employ their baits

Of the models I tested, the 7'10" and 7'11" complement each other exceptionally well. Together they cover nearly everything short of the largest magnum swimbaits, making them an ideal one-two punch for serious swimbait anglers. I enjoyed keeping both rods rigged and ready, rotating between subsurface swimmers and wake-style baits to show fish different looks until they finally committed. It's a combination that proved effective and one I'd have no hesitation recommending to anglers looking to build a versatile big bait arsenal.

Ratings:

Shimano Outlier 7'10" Swimbait Rod Ratings (?/10)

Construction/Quality The Outlier rods are unique in that they look and feel like a purpose built custom swimbait rod yet have all the consistency and quality that you expect from a major player like Shimano. Overall a very clean and high quality build 9
Performance There are not many areas where the Outlier doesn't perform well. If we nitpick these are not the lightest swimbait rods and both the rods we tested have a slight tip bias but overall these rods cast beautifully and work the biggest glides and wakes with ease. When there is a fish on the line the Outlier has a ton of backbone to muscle fish in yet never feels sloppy or like a broomstick 9
Price $399 for a swimbait rod of this quality, two-piece design, and a high quality rod sleeve? Totally worth it! 8.5
Features Loaded with features including a proprietary blank and reel seat, high quality Fuji SiC guides, two piece design, oversized hook hanger, and those excellent ergonomic spiral grips 9
Design (Ergonomics) While slightly tip biased these rods handle the vast majority of big baits really well. Ergonomic features include the flexibility of the two-piece design and the very comfortable spiral wrapped grips 9
Application The 7'10" and 7'11" rods are a great one two punch for swimbait enthusiasts but if I could only have one Outlier it would be the ultra versatile 7'10" rod which is a true swimbait stick that handles the sweet spot of 3-6oz. full sized baits. This is a great glide and wake rod and can also fish bigger plugs and rats 8

Pluses and Minuses:

Plus

Minus
+ Very clean build that looks and feels like a custom rod with Shimano consistency - Not the lightest swimbait rod, but certainly not considered heavy, and a slight tip bias
+ Not a broomstick. Feels crisp and accurate when cast. Strong overall caster that is fun to fish - Oversized handle may not appeal to all anglers (I personally love it)
+ The spiral wrapped grips look awesome and feel great
+ Lively enough tip to work baits and plenty of power in the rod to manage big fish
+ Great Fuji guides and a comfortable proprietary Ci4+ reel seat
+ Not a stretch to say this is the best swimbait rod series that Shimano has ever built
+ A great price for a rod of this quality

Conclusion: I don't think it's a hot take to say the Outlier series is the best lineup of swimbait rods Shimano has ever produced. Previous Shimano swimbait offerings certainly got the job done, but they often felt like heavier-powered extensions of the company's bass rod lineup rather than purpose-built tools designed specifically for throwing big baits.

Full sized glides like the Baitsanity Explorer swimbaits are easy to bring to life to fish with the 7'10" Outlier

The Outlier series changes that narrative. These rods feel like they were conceived from the ground up with performance-oriented swimbait anglers in mind. The influence of Shimano's Sam Kennedy and the development team's passion for big bait fishing is evident throughout the series, from the carefully selected tapers and ergonomics to the thoughtful component choices that enhance both casting and lure control.

Unlike many Heavy action swimbait rods the Outlier has the ability to sling big baits without feeling too stiff or heavy

In many ways, the Outlier name couldn't be more appropriate. These rods stand apart from the rest of Shimano's lineup. They have the look, feel, and personality of a premium custom swimbait rod while benefiting from Shimano's proprietary technologies, including Spiral X, Hi-Power X, and CI4+ construction. Of all the features, the spiral-textured grips left the biggest impression on me. Beyond providing outstanding comfort and control, they're a constant tactile reminder that these rods were designed with a different level of purpose and attention to detail.

The Outlier is the best swimbait rod series that Shimano has introduced to date. These rods are priced right and exhibit plenty of custom features with a high-quality and consistent build. Most importantly they fish confidently and are still fun to wield all day

By blending proven Shimano technologies with high-quality Fuji components, refined ergonomics, and a level of character that has been missing from the company's previous swimbait offerings, the Outlier series delivers something that feels special. They're not simply the best swimbait rods Shimano has built, they're legitimately excellent swimbait rods that deserve serious consideration from even the most dedicated big bait enthusiasts, and is also currently the only rod to take home our Editor’s Choice Award this year.
