Rod Review

Cast, Crank, REACT!! : Cumara CUCX711MH (continued)

Power: Thanks to the rod's length, more so than its taper, the CUCX711MH gives you a very good amount of leverage when battling a fish. I didn't manage any monsters with this stick and keep missing the Striper run on the California Delta, but the CUCX711MH has yet to disappoint me, this is one very multi-talented fishing rod!

A Mattlures Hard Bluegill fish courtesy of the CUCX711MH.

Its rear handle is just long enough to brace against my forearm when fighting any kind of hard puller and its backbone is more than sufficient at least against black bass up to about four pounds. Overall I was very satisfied with this rod's power.

Feature wise, we've seen it before from the split reel seat...

Sensitivity: Even though this is a stick for moving baits, sensitivity is still pretty good. If you're fishing any kind of bait with a vibration to it – a lipless crank, Colorado blade spinnerbait, chatterbait, etc., chances are you're going to feel it with this stick. On the flip side, all the hits I encountered with this stick were pretty violent so I never needed to rely upon it to transmit subtle takes and pickups.

... to the small but effective hook keeper ...

Features: For the CUCX711MH, Shimano makes use of the same feature set found in other Cumara rods including stainless steel framed, SiC guides, EVA foam split grips, and a split reel seat. At seven feet eleven inches in length, this stick is far from cumbersome and a really fun and easy rod to use all day long.

... to the hard edged, sculpted butt.

Application: Pictures more than tell the story with this stick. If you're looking for an easy to handle stick with minimal components to use in slinging some of your smaller big baits, or some of your larger conventional baits, the CUCX711MH fits that bill. Shimano's recommendations for this stick are spot on, but now you know you can extend that recommendation a bit if you have that inclination.

The CUCX711MH is a slick stick.

Warranty: The CUCX711MH and its Cumara Reaction series siblings are covered under the same limited lifetime warranty as the other Cumara series rods. This coverage includes over the counter exchange from participating dealers. Pluses and Minuses:

+ A nice combination of length, castability, and power - Not so much a knock on the CUCX711MH as much as a call for a true big bait stick in the Cumara Reaction Series
+ Minimalist design leads to minimal weight
+ Can handle baits up to 3 ounces in a pinch but best with baits under 2

Conclusion: The CUCX711MH is one of two 7’11” rods in the Cumara Reaction lineup. The CUCX711MH’s twin is the CUC711MH, a rod that shares identical ratings but comes in a fast instead of extra fast taper. Together these two sticks provide the range just about any reaction bait fishermen might need out of an almost eight foot long stick when slinging conventional lures like big spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, deep running cranks, and even topwater lures.

While we verified the CUCX711MH is not intended for big bait applications, it’s nice to know it can handle some of them in a pinch.

There’s no replacing the distance you can get when casting a bait from a stick that’s almost eight feet in length. For big baits, well, Shimano has yet to truly address that need in the Cumara Reaction series. Whether they intend to do so or not is anyone’s guess and while we verified the CUCX711MH is not intended for this application, it’s nice to know this stick can handle some of these duties in a pinch. When it comes to fishing smaller reaction baits the Cumara CUCX711MH is yet another rod that showcase's Shimano' continuing growth in refinement and performance in the rod category, the company has come a long way in just a few seasons and it doesn't look like that momentum is going to stop anytime soon.
