Introduction:
Mergers and acquisitions are the way of life in the corporate world. Brands come and go, and some become part of larger conglomerates. The fishing world is no different. Recently, a rod building brand in Arkansas known for rolling their own blanks and building their own rods in Harrison, Arkansas was the target of a major player in the bass fishing world, GSM. GSM Outdoors has acquired many notable brands over the last few years including Yamamoto Baits, Bagley, Big Bite Baits, Roboworms, Dobyns Rods, Phenix Rods and more.

Phenix Rods, through parent company GSM, now has access to their own blank rolling company with the acquisition of Mid-America Rod Company

Most of these brands, thus far anyway, have remained intact. However, that Arkansas rod building brand, Mid-America Rod Company, has been rolled under Phenix Rods and after months of testing and a little retooling, the first fruits of this new venture are beginning to hit tackle stores. Today, we share our first look into this new collaboration with our review on Phenix Rods's new Virtus Blue Diamond line and their 7'-6" HM Glide.

Impressions: The first thing that struck me with this rod is there's no secret code model number. Literally, on the rod is printed "7'-6" Hvy Mod - Glide Power 7" along with the lure and line weight recommendations. Virtus, as the former signature brand of Mid-America Rod Company, still had an active website as of this writing and looking through it, I saw this is how they referred to all their rods. I'm sure it's just a matter of time before GSM or Phenix corrects this oversight and works up some model numbers for these rods. It just makes it easier to catalog, order, talk about, etc.. First thing I'm going to do for this stick is work up its own secret code so I don't have to type out its specification each time I call it out. So, for the purposes of this article, the Phenix Rods Virtus Blue Diamond 7'-6" Heavy Moderate Glide will be referred to as the VBD76HMG.

Introducing Virtus by Phenix and the Blue Diamond 7'-6" Hvy Mod Glide, a stick I will be referring to as the VDB76HMG

The VBD76HMG is built on a blank rolled with thirty ton graphite from Toray. It is assembled with a split rear grip that measures thirteen and a half inches (13.5") from the back end of the reel seat to the butt, and wrapped with Fuji, stainless steel framed guides with Alconite inserts. For this rod specifically, all the guides are double footed and span from size 10 at the stripper to 7 running guides and a 6 or 7 tip top. Sizes were derived by mic'ing the outside of the ring inserts and I got 6.5 at the tip top, so I don't know if that means it's a size 6 or 7 and I don't think Fuji makes a 6.5. Why guide sizes are not determined by the size of the actual opening, I do not know or understand. Anyway, the point here is the guides are definitely normal sized and not micro or even semi-micro.

The VDB76HMG features a split rear grip design with cork

Real World Tests: I paired my VDB76HMG with my 2024 Shimano Japan Scorpion MD 201. The reel was still loaded with the Sunline FX2 braid in 80lb test from last year. I simply tied on a new leader of 22lb Seaguar Tatsu for this review and then attached a 2 sized Nishine Lure Works Original Snap to the end of the leader to make switching between baits easier.

The reel seat is a Fuji ECS with a decorative hood

Casting: To test the VDB76HMG's casting range, I started out with an old school bait I thought should be right in the stick's wheelhouse. At just under two ounces in weight, my Mattlures Hard Bluegill Series, two-piece crappie was just the bait I needed. What I discovered is the VDB76HMG's taper is very accurately described as moderate. Even with the svelte Mattlures Hardgill, this stick loaded pretty far down the blank on the back cast, so to make accurate casts, I had to adjust my release point accordingly. The effect is most evident during sidearm casts. With straight, overhead casting, accuracy is not an issue since everything is still in line with your target. The only thing affected while casting overhead is the arch of the cast.

Guides are Fuji Alconites

The really good news with the VDB76HMG is I was able to switch baits out and cast the heavier, Illude Baits Pistol Gill, at just over three ounces, with ease. The rod is soft during the back cast, but very capable of launching baits within its entire rated lure range.

The blank is made from 30T graphite and sanded for a clean look

The VDB76HMG's sensitivity is good enough, but you don't really need much when bass are as crazy as this little guy

Sensitivity: Fishing big, hard bodied glide baits - or even glides up to three ounces in weight that aren't necessarily that big - is like fishing a mid-water column crankbait in that sensitivity isn't very important.

The VDB76HMG is built with a blank rolled mostly with 30T graphite. Armed with that information, right off the bat, I knew it wasn't going to be a super crisp blank. What this does afford you though is better durability, and really, it should be sensitive enough for this application. The VDB76HMG fits these assumptions - it is sensitive enough.

Enough to actually feel the thumping of your glide or small crankdown and definitely sensitive enough to feel the eventual smashing of those baits by a hungry or angry bass - no matter the size.

Phenix Rods Virtus Blue Diamond 76HMG against the historical averages of similarly powered rods we've tested over the past twenty plus years

Power: If there were such a thing as a bait finesse system for swimbaits (SBFS?), the VDB76HMG would fall into that category. As our RoD Deflection Chart illustrates, this stick falls within our category of Finesse Swimbait Sticks. It has a nice, moderate taper that behaves like a traditional cranking stick. This softer taper helps keep bass pinned when breaking the surface with a big, fat bait in their mouth. The softer taper makes it difficult for the bass to gain enough leverage to throw the bait, yet allows you to maintain enough pressure to land your catch.

Next: Design and Ergonomics, more Virtus or Phenix?
