Rod Review (Travel Rod)

Take Two (Piece) with Phenix's Feather Casting Rods (continued)

Design & Ergonomics: The FTX-C277MH weighs in at an incredible three point seven ounces (3.7oz). That's nuts for a casting rod of this length. Naturally, with that length and light weight build comes a bit of tip-heaviness. The stick's balance point is eleven and a half inches up from the midline of the reel seat. Not terrible, mind you, but certainly enough to where you'll feel it trying to balance the stick in your hand.

The FTX-C722MH has two-piece portability

Yet once assembled, you can easily forget it's a multi-piece rod

The real question at the outset of this review, however, is whether or not this two-piece fishing rod handles like its one-piece siblings and the answer is yes. Once assembled, I never gave the fact this stick breaks down into two pieces another thought. The stick bends through its length with zero difficulty and handles casting, pitching, fish fighting duties perfectly.

Phenix goes with a name brand guide train featuring Fuji's FazLite guides

The rear grip is very small in diameter, just barely thicker than the blank itself

Price & Applications: If you're interested in this stick's length, power, and versatility, but not keen on the fact it's a two-piece, there's also a one-piece version of this same rod in Phenix's standard Feather series. Price for the two versions of this fishing rod is identical at $159.00. Even though there's a little bit of extra labor involved creating the two-piece stick, Phenix does not discriminate with their price.

Best of all, Phenix maintains the price of this stick at $159 - same as all the other sticks in their Feather series

Pluses and Minuses:

Plus

Minus
+ Fishes like a one-piece - Just a tad tip heavy
+ Super light for its length - Those expecting a medium-heavy power will be disappointed
+ New, brand name guide-train

Conclusion: The best thing I can say about this stick is if you handed me the combo at the beginning of the day, I likely never would have noticed it was a two-piece rod. Obviously, that ferrule in the middle of the stick would have given it away, but that's only if I looked there. It surprised me a little, that Phenix went to a name brand guide train, but everything else about this stick feels the same as I remember from the FTX-71MH we reviewed in September of 2018.

If you're looking for a two-piece stick with one-piece fishability at a price that won't break the budget, check out Phenix's two-piece Feather sticks

My only real criticism? The stick's power rating. But this is something we've come to expect from Phenix. Their ratings typically run heavier than how their rods actually perform. That's ok, as long as you realize this from the outset. There are other companies where the opposite is true. This is why every bass rod we review spends time in the lab - it's like a combine for fishing rods. In the meantime, if you're looking for a two-piece stick with one-piece fishability at a price that won't break the budget, check out Phenix's two-piece Feather sticks!
