When Swimbaits Meet BFS, It's Time to Swing!

Introduction:
Two of today's more popular methods of chasing those green fish with sizable mouths are on opposite ends of the tackle spectrum, BFS and swimbaits. The two methods are so divergent, it's difficult to combine the two as most compromises just leave you with a feeling you're fishing conventional techniques, and who needs that? For that reason, it's been difficult for me personally, to fish anything other than vertical bait techniques when going finesse - until now. Let's take a look at a bait that promises to redefine how I approach fishing BFS tackle, Keitech's Swing Bait.

Impressions: The term "Swimbait" means different things to different anglers and relies a lot on context. For me, it mostly refers to oversized hardbaits which is why I prefer to use the term, "big baits" when talking about glides, wakes, and swimmers. But the term, swimbait, is also used to refer to a variety of soft bodied baits like the Hudd, and smaller baits with paddle shaped tails. Specificity and precision are not strong points of the fishing industry.

Introducing Keitech's Swing Bait 2.8

Keitech's Swing Bait is in that last category I mentioned. It is a tiny, sub-three-inch bait made of soft plastic with a paddle shaped tail. Unlike other soft bodied, paddletail baits, however, the Swing Bait is molded into two sections with a very thin mid-section or waist holding the two larger ends together. It's a bait profile somewhat common in Japan and one I'd first fished with Sawamura's One-Up Shad close to twenty years ago. It's a profile that has been picked up by a few other brands since.

The Swing Bait is of a profile and configuration I first saw in Sawamura's One-Up Shad roughly twenty years ago

The difference, of course, with Keitech's interpretation is the size. The Swing Bait measures two and seven eights inches (2 7/8") in length, which doesn't seem THAT small, but couple that info with the fact it only weighs 2.1 grams and the great majority of fisher people are going to be throwing this bait on spinning gear.

Of course, the two baits are a little different in size

Real World Tests: We here at TackleTour, of course, strive to do things differently. To that end, my combo of choice for Keitech's Swing Bait began with a stick from ARK's new Gravity Bass Finesse Series, the six foot, eight inch (6'-8") BF68LXC paired with a prototype BFS reel, also by ARK. For line, I chose Varivas Super Trout Advance Double Cross x8 in gau #0.8 and started things off with no leader.

A closer look at the Swing Bait 2.8

Ease of Rigging : The biggest decision with Keitech's Swing Bait is how one chooses to rig it. Keitech USA's website has a graphic suggesting a #1 sized worm hook for their Swing Bait. I liked it better on a size 2. You can also fish this bait on a ball head or as a drop shot bait, but I was curious to see how it behaved on a bare hook without the assistance of weight. Granted, I was also testing the rod and reel at the time.

First hook out of my utility box I tried. Figured it I'd better check Keitech's recommendation

Ease of Actuation : Cast out onto the water, the Swing Bait, fished unweighted (not weightless because the bait itself weighs 2 grams) sits mostly at the surface. Begin your retrieve and the bait's tail kicks instantly. Cast it out far enough and you can get it to buzz along the surface like a super stealthy and tiny little, one legged toad.

Well, they recommend a size 1 worm hook - looks too long to me

Quality of Movement : I was mesmerized by the Swing Bait's action. For such a tiny size, it causes a good amount of commotion. But all that lasted only a handful of casts because my Super Trout Advance line was just too bright to inspire confidence I'd get a hit. So I tied on a leader of six pound (6lb) fluorocarbon (Spro FC Leader) and tried again. The effect the FC leader had was to pull the bait down enabling me to fish it just under the surface.

So I tried a #2 (from BKK) and this size I liked much better

Once I made that change, the hits quickly followed. Most were undersized bass, but that's what happens when fishing small baits - lots of small fish. Still, on light line and tackle, it's a lot of fun. Hence the popularity of BFS techniques.

Doesn't take long to get bit on a bait this small and active

Still, to change things up, I pulled out a BFS sized underspin by Zappu, the Bredy Weedless Underspin. I only had it in #3 size on hand, but it fit the Swing Bait just fine. Note the Bredy Weedless Underspin is also available in #2.

Trouble is, with a bait this small, you get a lot of small bites

This change allowed me to get the bait a little deeper where I hoped, larger bites might occur. I was right, and down one stretch of bank for about a dozen straight casts, I was either getting followers, short strikes or catches every time. It was quite the scene though I fail to understand how I could get short strikes on a bait so small.

Shown here rigged on a Zappu Bredy Weedless Underspin in size #3

Durability : Nevertheless, through all that action and the hits I did manage to convert, the Swing Bait showed surprising durability. I figure this has a lot to do with the bait's size. Fish just inhale it so there's little to tear or rip off during battle. Granted, it's still a soft plastic bait so anything is possible. Just my experience but this bait held up better than I would have thought.

The Swing Bait comes packaged in a clear plastic clamshell to help keep the baits from fouling in storage

Design & Ergonomics: Keitech presents their Swing Bait in a resealable ziplock bag of eight baits held in a rigid plastic trey to keep the tail from fouling in storage. There are at least sixteen (16) patterns from which to choose and the plastic that Keitech uses to form the bait is infused with a squid scent and flavor same as the majority of their soft plastic baits.

Priced at about quarter per lineal inch, this bait is more expensive than a full length candy bar back in the day

Price & Applications: Retailing for $5.69 per package, that comes to about $0.71 per bait or $0.25 per inch. Used to be you could buy a full sized candy bar for $0.25, but the Swing Bait is a lot easier to rig on a hook.

If you're looking to breathe life into your finesse angling approach, check out Keitech's Swing Bait, it just might win you over too

Conclusion: Though I really enjoy the technical aspects of putting a BFS combo together, truth be known, I've become rather fatigued at using the gear in pursuit of largemouth bass. The smaller bites can get a little mind numbing at times, and at least for me it's just difficult to switch that big bait mindset off. Keitech's Swing Bait bridges that gap, opening up the opportunity to hunt for reaction bites using a weedless bait in or near cover where I have no business using six pound test line. It's unexpectedly exhilarating! If you're looking to breathe life into your finesse angling approach, check out Keitech's Swing Bait, it just might win you over too.
