Crankin' It Up for Football Season with Keitech

Introduction:
Two of the most iconic baits in the bass fishing world are the jig and the crankbait. Jigs because they are so simple, accessible, and effective. Crankbaits because, well, who doesn't like just chucking and winding all day to illicit that reaction strike? The swim jig kinda sorta combines the two but without the disruption something like a squarebill crankbait can cause. Keitech has a recently debuted a bait that might address that deficiency. Let's take a look at their Crankin' Football Jig.

Keitech Crankin' Football Jig Specifications

Type Football Jig
Skirt Material Silicone
Weight 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1oz
Colors/Patterns 9
Hook 4/0 Decoy
MSRP $6.39

Impressions: Though classified as a "football" head, Keitech describes their Crankin' Football Jig's head as a reverse delta head - a descriptor to convey the head's more triangular profile. The skirt material is traditional silicone, hand tied, and very full extending about three quarters of an inch (3/4") beyond the back of the hook. The hook itself is a custom, 4/0 size by Decoy described as a "sproat" shape.

Keitech taking swim jigs to the next level with a Crankin' Football?

The bait's line tie is horizontal and presents at about the ten o'clock or ten-thirty position if viewed from the side with the bait's head on the left and skirt on the right The weed guard is pretty standard nylon material with about fourteen strands for those who like a count. It actually feels like fewer strands than typical.

From left to right, 1/2oz, 3/4oz, 1oz.

Real World Tests: I rarely dedicate combos to specific baits or techniques these days because I usually have an array of rods and reels I need to fish in order to write them up properly. So lures usually take a back seat in terms of priority and get fished on whichever rod, reel, or combo needs time on the water. I say this as a qualifier because it is my intent to fish Keitech's Crankin' Football Jig on a dedicated combo featuring one of my Phenix K2 736H builds paired with Abu Garcia Zenon MG-X. Specifically, this is my MG-X 8.3 spooled with Seaguar Threadlock and a leader of 20lb Seaguar Gold Label. We'll see how that pans out.

Profile view of the jig reveals that classic football shape

I fished the Crankin' Football with a few different trailers, the most intriguing of which was one of Keitech's own product, the Swing Impact FAT Swimbait 3.8 the other being Roboworm's Ned Worm.

Skirts are hand tied

The interesting thing about this bait is, fished as the name would suggestion it does drag along the bottom kind of stirring things up. but it does so in a straight line. This is where the Swing Impact FAT helps because that tail just waves around during the retrieve. However, when you give the bait a pop with your rod tip, it swims up, then down, landing tail up, head down. The Crankin' Football Jig actually stands up when hopped, looking like a swimbait sized Ned head.

Flip the jig on its side, and that football shape is no longer there. Keitech calls it a delta head

That's where the idea to fish it with Roboworm's Ned Worm came from. I needed a Ned style worm, but bigger and something that would easily float up. Robo's Ned was perfect for that and really presented like a giant, swimbait sized Ned rig.

Hop this bait along the bottom, pause, and it will stand up like this presenting like a big-bait sized Ned head

Design & Ergonomics: Keitech's Crankin' Football Jig is available in nine different patterns in four different head sizes. This is a lead headed jig which is a little surprising to me given the company's extensive array of tungsten jigs. The hook, as mentioned earlier is forged by Decoy with the official size being 4/0. I feel some of these hook size call outs on baits have become arbitrary, so I went ahead and took some measurements readers can use to compare against their favorite baits and determine if this one is suitable for your purposes. The diagram below breaks down the method of this quick little analysis.

Price & Applications: Keitech's Crankin' Football jig retails for $6.39 per copy. This is a price that I initially thought was a lot, but a quick glance at football jigs on TackleWarehouse reveals a different story. Bass Patrol is my constant go-to for a quality, inexpensive jig. Formerly a $1.99 jig, their round rubber football jigs are now $2.79 - $3.29. The most expensive football jigs I saw were $8.99 while the median really seems to be in that $4.97 - $6.99 range, so the Crankin' Football is actually rather average in price. I need to recalibrate that price tracker in my brain with regards to jigs.

Pluses and Minuses:

Plus

Minus
+ Really well made jig - Limited number of colors
+ Stands up on the bottom - Head not made of tungsten
+ Good hook up ratio
+ Hand tied skirts

I just may have found my new favorite jig

Conclusion: Jigs are a tough sell. There are so very many on the market and so many more being custom poured and tied. The only difference a jig maker can really offer is in the head design. What Keitech has presented here with their Crankin' Football is a jig that actually, truly, stands up on its head when hopped along the bottom. Some will do this trick if kept on a tight line, but the Crankin' Football will do so on slack line behaves like a giant, big bait sized Ned head. Only thing missing for me is a wider selection of colors, but I guess that's why we add trailers. If you're looking to add something different to your jig fishing arsenal, you need to add Keitech's Crankin' Football Jig to your list of baits to try.
