Evergreen International's Light Cavalry CLCC-71H (continued)

Features: Of course the feature that attracted us to this rod in the first place was its two-piece design. Given it's only a two-piece, the CLCC-71H is not a true travel stick (usually three or four pieces). It also doesn't come with a sturdy rod tube, but it does have a custom neoprene-like rod sleeve with separate compartments inside the sleeve for the two distinct rod pieces.

They don't just leave the ends unfinished.

Guides on this stick are Fuji Kseries with stainless steel frames and SiC inserts, the rear grip is split EVA foam, there is no factory installed hook keeper, and the reel seat is a Fuji ECS seat painted to match the rod's blank.

They cap them off with these metal pieces that feature two dots that serve as alignment guides to help you line up your guides!

A detail I really like about this stick is the use of two metal pieces to finish the rod off on each side of the two piece blank right at the ferrule. These metal bands each have a white dot on them used to match the two pieces properly to ensure your guides are aligned. Why more manufacturers don't do something similar to this with their multipiece rods is beyond me.

Fuji KSeries SS/SiC Micros perfectly aligned.

A painted Fuji ECS reel seat too.

Design/Ergonomics: I mentioned earlier how I enjoyed this rod's performance on pitching presentations but how I found the combo of the REVO Beast together with the weight of this rod a bit cumbersome for my wrists for extended pitching presentations. The CLCC-71H actually only weighs four and a half ounces (4.5oz). Where the difficulty lies is with the rod's balance. Its balancing torque is 0.26ftlbs - just below the average of our flipping stick historical data but remember, those sticks are typically seven foot six inches (7'-6") in length or more. The CLCC-71H's two-piece construction results in a rod that's a little out of whack balance wise.

This heavy powered rod is very versatile.

Aside from that, the rod's grip and reel seat are very comfortable to grasp, its rear handle length is good for both one handed and two handed casts, and the rod's graphics are typical Evergreen - understated and tastefully executed. The simple silver and black motif is very classy and even Zander remarked upon first seeing the stick, "that's a nice looking rod, who makes that?" When I told him Evergreen, he just smiled in quiet acknowledgement and nodded his head as if to say "of course".

It may be two pieces but it fishes like a one piece rod.

If the CLCC-71H doesn't quite meet your spec's, there are several more sticks in Evergreen's Light Cavalry suite of rods.

Application: The CLCC-71H is a prototypical "heavy" powered rod along the lines of G.Loomis's classic MBR844C GLX. Stay within the rod's lure ratings and you can pretty much fish almost any type of technique. Thanks to this rod's dual taper design, those techniques also include moving baits. It might not be a stick to choose for dedicated cranking duties, but it can handle these applications in a pinch when you're restricted with the number of rods you can have with you - like when you're on travel.

Pluses and Minuses:

Plus

Minus
+ Really good all around performance - Only two pieces not three or four
+ Super clean construction and detailing - Doesn't come with a sturdy travel case
+ Two-piece is better than one piece when considering a travel rod - Tip heavy

Largemouth are fun, but when I'm thinking about traveling with a two-piece rod, I get the itch to head back to the Amazon. Next time I go, I'm bringing the CLCC-71H with me!

Conclusion: How I wish I had another trip to the Amazon planned to where I could bring this stick. It might be the only one I need to bring with me - if I had two or three so I didn't have to retie for different techniques. It is a very clean, classy build with excellent performance to back it up and of course, it fishes like a one-piece stick. Little details like the alignment guide for the two separate pieces show Evergreen International knows how to cater to the high end consumer. If you're looking for a high end travel stick and can get by with a two-piece stick, you owe it to yourself to check out this rod or any of the other sticks in the Light Cavalry family.
