Fishing with World Series winning Phillies Shortstop Eric Bruntlett

Date: 2/08/09
Location: Clear Lake, California
Event Dates: Feb 7th, 2009
Reviewer: Team TT

Introduction: Eric Bruntlett, you have just won the world series, what are you going to do? Go fishing! When he isn’t playing ball 2008 World Series winning player Eric Bruntlett loves to fish, and with just seven days before reporting to spring training the team at TT go fishing with Eric at his favorite location….Clear Lake.

Zander pairs up with Professional Baseball player Eric Bruntlett for a day of fishing on Clear Lake

About Eric Bruntlett: If you’re a Phillies fan then Eric needs no introduction, he is known for his defensive versatility and has played a number of positions including second base, leftfield, and shortstop. He was born in Lafayette Indiana and made his way to the West coast when he played baseball at Stanford University while pursuing a degree in Economics. He helped the Stanford Cardinal in three appearances in the College World Series and Eric was named to the NCAA Regional All-Tournament team twice.

Eric was a big part of the World Series win for the Phillies and had some serious clutch hits, but today he had on his mind were fish

After hitting .342 for Stanford he was selected by the Houston Astros in the 2000 amateur draft, and made his way through the minors until he was called up to the majors on June 27th, 2003. He played with the Astros through 2007 when he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies.

He had a quality 2008 year with the Phillies hitting .217 with 46 hits, 2 home runs, and 15 RBIs but it was during the post season where he really made his biggest mark on the team by hitting a home run in Game 2 followed by a game winning run in Game 3 of the World Series and topping it all off by scoring the series clinching run in Game 5 which served up the first World Series win for the Phillies since 1980 and their second overall.

Eric proved to be quite an angler (Leo and the rest of the TT crew can be seen in the fog in the back)

Let’s Play Ball: So why fish with Eric Bruntlett? We jumped at the opportunity to fish with Eric as he has a passion for fishing, and we looked forward to seeing how a world class athlete from another sport approached angling, not to mention he is also an avid reader of the site. In fact it was after reading a Kistler Helium review five years ago that he went out and purchased a Helium LTA, which remains his favorite rod to date.

Finally the fog burns off!

Our day started at 2:30AM when we head up north across the Golden Gate to meet up with Tom “Leo” Leogrande, a member of our contributing editor staff and also member of the MonsterFishing Tackle.com team. We then continued our trek up to Clear Lake with his Legend boat in tow. The plan was simple, first meet Eric Bruntlett at the launch ramp at Clear Lake, then proceed to catch fish and break Leo’s 2009 jinx of being not catching a fish yet. Easy right? Well, as always it proved easier said than done.

With the fog behind us we get to fishing ripbaits
