Putting the "What?" in Creature Baits, the Deps Bull Flat

Introduction:
If there's a correlation between abstract art and bass fishing, it's within the bait category of soft plastic creatures. Can you imagine the bait profiles Picasso would have dreamed up were he a bass fisherman? The crawfish has got to be the most interpreted little bass morsel in this category but recently, there's been an influx of profiles abstracted from another popular bass meal, the bluegill. Similar to the crawfish, some of these soft plastic imitations are quite literal, but others, well, what? Today, we take a look at one such "what?" bait from Deps, the Bull Flat.

Impressions: Deps's soft plastic Bull Flat can best be described as a creature bait that's been smashed under a coffee mug to make the body thinner and wider, with a ribbed swimbait tail attached instead of claws. However, if you prefer this profile with claws, it's actually available in Deps's BullSlide Creature Bait. Albeit, the creature variation is not quite as wide because it's well, a creature - obviously.

Checking out Deps's Bull Flat Creature bait.

The Bull Flat comes in five different sizes from two to just under six inches. I fished the 5.8 and 3.8 sizes. There are at least twenty six (26) color variations to choose from with all the baits infused with a crustacean scent for added allure.

Rigged on an Owner Flashy Swimmer.

Real World Tests: As with any soft plastic bait, how you choose to fish it is entirely up to you, but how I chose to fish this wide, flat bodied soft plastic bait was with a weighted, wide gap swimbait hook that would place the weight more towards the center of the bait, rather than at the head. Given the bait's profile, this just seemed to make sense. I'll explain in a later, but for the 5.8 sized Bull Flat, this meant a 5/0 Owner Flashy Swimmer hook and with the smaller, 3.8 size, I chose a 3/0 BKK Titan Diver hook. I found the BKK option very interesting for the placement of the weight and also, the little rubber nub bait keeper along the bend.

Ease of Rigging : A feature I found very interesting with the Bull Flat is the fact the hook slot along the centerline of the bait is like a size guide, segmented along the length, making it easier to pinpoint where to insert the hook for a weedless presentation. It's certainly not necessary, but it's a nice convenience and attention to detail.

Ease of Actuation : Now, rigged in this manner, with a hook, weighted along the shank, I figured the Bull Flat should have an interesting behavior on the fall and one I witnessed while fishing the less wide, O.S.P. DoLive Beaver. When fished with a similar style hook, that bait would swim away from me on the fall. The Bull Flat does the DoLive Beaver one better. Thanks to its wider profile, this bait spirals on the fall, in a slow, very enticing manner.

The tail gets moving on retrieve speeds just above slow.

Quality of Movement : During that slow, enticing spiral of death, the Bull Flat's tail doesn't do much of anything. To get it to move, you need to swim the bait back to you at a better than slow pace, and then, if you kill your retrieve, the bait will spiral. This is only if rigged with the afore mentioned style of hook. If you rig the Bull Flat with a bullet weight or swimbait head, where all the weight is at the front of the bait, it will behave like a typical creature bait - head down, tail up, on a straight fall.

At rest, the tail doesn't have enough buoyancy to stand.

Position at Rest : That's only on the fall. Left to rest on the bottom in either configuration and the Bull Flat is not very interesting at all. It will just settle on the bottom. The tail doesn't have enough buoyancy to lift up on its own. This bait is definitely best with movement of some type.

The side appendages remind me of wear markers on brand new bicycle tires.

Durability : As with most soft plastic baits worth fishing, durability is not a strong suit for the Deps Bull Flat. The plastic tears easily and it will get torn up if you're into fish, but that's why you get several per pack, so you can replace the baits once they get torn up. If you're replacing your bait often, that's a good thing, because it means you're catching. Fortunately, I did not have any issues with the Bull Flat tearing prematurely during non-fish catching moments.

The majority of my hits were on that death spiral.

Design & Ergonomics: Available in so many different sizes, I imagine, if you fished the smaller sizes, the Bull Flat would make an effective drop shot bait. I probably wouldn't count on it too much as a Ned trailer because the tail doesn't float up, but if you choose something like the Zappu Bredy Weedless Underspin hook, I'm sure you can accomplish the same presentations I described above, but in a more finesse fashion.

Infused with crustacean scent.

The baits all come in a re-sealable ziplock style bag so storage is easy and you don't really have to worry about kinking the tails because the bait's action is not dependent upon a perfectly true swimming tail. I'm not sure what the three, tiny side appendages offer other than to serve as a possible wear indicator like those you find on a new bicycle tire.

Colors are very intricate.

Price & Applications: Deps's Bull Flat retails for about eleven to twelve dollars ($11 - $12) with the number of baits varying from ten to four per pack. All the variables depend on the size you are purchasing. Given this is a soft plastic, creature/gill, the applications for which this bait is suitable are entirely up to your imagination. However, this bait is very effective fished in the manner I described above.

Pluses and Minuses:

Plus

Minus
+ Killer on the death spiral presentation - If it matters to you, durability is not a strong suit
+ Infused with scent - Certain sizes may be difficult to source at times
+ A wide array of effective looking patterns
+ Very easy to rig

Conclusion: With so many artists offering their interpretation of tasty fish tempting morsels, it is nothing short of daunting when trying to decide upon a new piece to add to your arsenal. Fortunately, soft plastic baits are more accessible and affordable than a painting and you don't have to punch a hole in your wall to appreciate them.

This connoisseur showed his appreciation when I dangled the Bull Flat in front of his face

Deps's Bull Flat Creature bait is worthy of appreciation and when hanging it in front of the faces of the bass in your favorite lake, they won't question the "what?". They'll simply react to that evocative death spiral in an effort to claim the Bull Flat for themselves. That in and of itself, is the art of bass fishing.
