Taking Hook Organization to the Level of Obsession : BKK's OCD Tackle System

Introduction:
How many times have you been caught short handed because you really needed something like a 4/0 hook in a certain style but all you could find in your tangle of tackle were 5/0s? Ever ordered some of those cool looking new-to-you soft plastics only to realize upon delivery, you don't have the proper hook, causing you had to place another +$50 order to get free shipping on the ones you do need? Hooks are a vital component of your tackle system yet if you don't have the correct configuration on hand, fine tuning your bait setup often results in delays and compromises. Compromises that might result in losing that catch of a lifetime or at least the one that could have earned you a paycheck at that tourney which would have covered the shipping fee on that follow up hook order.

How many times have you been caught short handed, disorganized, or just couldn't find that hook size you really need within your arsenal?

Even if you have a good selection of your favorite hooks in various sizes on hand, keeping it all straight can be a challenge: rubber banding packages by size; ziplocks of hook styles; boxes to hold the ziplocks of rubber banded packaging, and then oh! you forgot to refill that one hook size you used up on our last trip out! You know you can relate. The question is how many hours have you spent trying develop a system where you can keep it all straight? My latest involves cutting up the cardboard sleeve denoting the hook style and size and squeezing it into the storage slot in my utility box where I keep the hook in question. It works, but gets messy when I have to re-order the slots, but if I ever drop that box and the contents spill out?

BKK has a solution

Well, if scenarios like this keep you up at night, new to the industry terminal tackle manufacturer, BKK, has a solution for us. It's their OCD Tackle Storage System - Fully Loaded. This is a 3700 adjacent sized utility box (BKK OCD = 12"x9"x2.5" vs 3700 = 14"x9"x3") containing 48 packs totaling 270 individual hooks in 9 different configurations, and I'm here to break it all down.

Presenting their OCD Tackle System

Background: First, BKK isn't really a new manufacturer. Their story began in China back in 1856 when a young, sixteen year old boy made his very first hook. That single step evolved over the decades through six generations resulting in a company that today, employs over six hundred people designing and manufacturing high quality hooks that BKK likes to say are created by anglers for anglers.

The ARMORPOINT brand within BKK launched at ICAST 2024

BKK entered the US Market in 2020 leaning on their already extensive collection of saltwater hook shapes and soon began developing pieces to support freshwater anglers. In 2023, ARMORPOINT was born building on insights from their first three years in this market. At ICAST 2024, the line was officially announced and to celebrate, they created their OCD Tackle Storage System.

To celebrate, they created their OCD Tackle Storage System fully loaded with the necessities

The Box : The case that houses all these hooks is a little shorter and a little more shallow than a Plano 3700. It has an opaque gray bottom and a semi-transparent, dark gray lid. Opening the lid reveals the 48 individual, hard plastic packages of hooks, each labeled with style and size. The OCD in me is bothered a little by the fact each style of hook does not have the same number of packages nor do they necessarily have their own section (row or column) in the box, but maybe that's just me.

If rows of perfectly labeled and aligned boxes of hooks helps settle your anxiety, this tackle system is meant for you

All hooks in this box are created with BKK's high carbon steel (HCS) featuring a higher than usual carbon content, that together with other alloys in the material, increase hardness and strength reaching a hardness of 700-730 Vickers (as compared to standard high-carbon steel hooks that are rated 600-650 Vickers). All ARMORPOINT hooks are created with a needle point hook.

Dropshot : There are five boxes of BKK's dropshot hook in the OCD ranging in size from 4 to 2/0. A graphic on the original packaging for the OCD box lists bait size recommendations for each hook assuming a nose hook rigging. Each hook in this series is coated with a polytetraflouroethylene (PTFE) material (Super Slide Coating) lowering the hook's friction coefficient which delivers excellent hooksetting performance with minimal pressure.

I rarely use anything other than a size 2 in my drop shot setup, but having options like this at quick disposal might change that - especially when rigging heavier line drop shot setups on the California Delta.

Dropshot-Long Shank : The company's Dropshot-Long Shank hook reminds me of the old, light wire, straight shank worm hooks I used to use in my split shotting days. There are also five boxes of these hooks inside the OCD only the size range is slightly different beginning at 2 instead of 4 and ranging up to 3/0. These hooks feature a fluorocarbon hook keeper that's wrapped onto the hook like a guide on our fishing rod and the eyelet is finished off with an epoxy resin closing off that little gap between the wire end and the hook shank. The Dropshot-Long Shank hooks have the same Super Slide Coating as the standard Dropshot hooks.

But my light wire worm hooks did not feature details like an epoxy resin coated eyelet and fluorocarbon bait keeper

I do not use a hook shape like this for dropshotting, but I would absolutely use it for light line Texas rigs around sparse cover and docks in high pressure situations. The weedless rigging option with the finesse bait keeper is a nice, clean detail I find quite appealing.

Offset Worm Round Bend : Speaking of thin wire worm hooks, BKK's Offset Round Bend hook is presented in six sizes in the OCD from size 1 through 5/0 in support of slim profile soft plastics that range from three to seven inches in length. This hook features the same needle point tip and Super Slide Coating.

This is the hook shape I reach for if and when it comes time to resort to the Senko

Offset Worm WG : For baits with more meat in the bodies like grubs and paddletail swimbaits, BKK presents eight sizes of their Offset wide gap (WG) hook with an enhanced Z-bend at the eye and the same needlepoint tip and Super Slick Coating advancements. Recommended in support of bait sizes from two and a half inches through five and a half inches.

Wide Gaps are arguably the most popular hook shape in bass fishing. BKK makes this staple in 8 sizes

The WG's z-bend at the top of the hook has a good length allowing sufficient room to properly secure your baits
