Built for the cold, but a solid option year round, Bass Union Finesse Jigs (continued)

Price and Applications: Retailing at $5.99 per bait, the Bass Union finesse football jigs are priced slightly above the average for lead-poured jigs. While there are more affordable options like Bass Patrol and Phenix ($3.99 - $4.99) and premium offerings from Picasso, Missile, and Beast Coast ($6.99 - $9.99), Bass Union jigs stand out at their price point due to their high-quality Gamakatsu hooks and hand-tied skirts, both features often reserved for higher-end jigs.

I like the 4 barb keeper on this jig as well as the finesse weedguard that is effective and yet not too big or thick. I never find I need to trim the guard on these jigs

Durability is a critical factor for any contact bait, and the Bass Union finesse jigs deliver. Built with premium metal, hand-tied rubber skirts, and a robust design, these jigs proved throughout testing that they can withstand the punishment of tough environments. The California Delta's rocky levees, known for chewing through tackle, really put these jigs to the test. Despite heavy use, the hooks remained sharp and rust-free, and the rubber skirts retained their structure and flexibility far longer than many competitors.

On cold winter days finessing these jigs have often yielded quality bites for me

Additionally, the baked on powder coated finishes held up very well, showing only minor scratches and chips over time. The Gamakatsu hooks stayed razor-sharp and were highly resistant to bending or breaking. Realistically, if you lose a Bass Union jig, it’s more likely due to a snag than a failure in craftsmanship.

While the Bass Union jigs excel in cold and tough conditions, where their smaller profile keeps the bait in play longer, I’ve found them to be versatile and effective year-round in both clear and murky water. The compact size pairs perfectly with a tiny trailer, yet the sturdy keeper is equally capable of holding larger trailers when a meatier profile is needed.

The jigs also hold up well over time and even when continually fishing them over rocky banks the twice baked powder coated heads have held up well

The Bass Union finesse jigs have consistently proven their worth and have earned a permanent spot in my go-to jig arsenal. Over the past two years, I’ve caught more fish on the Bass Union and Bass Patrol finesse football jigs than any other options. These are my top choices whenever the bite gets tough, crawdads begin to emerge, or I simply want to drag a smaller-profiled jig with confidence.

Joseph builds a really good jig, and while there are a lot of good finesse jig options out there the Bass Union signature jigs does a great job checking all the boxes

Ratings

Bass Union Finesse Football Jigs Ratings (?/10)

Construction/Quality The Bass Union jigs are extremely well build. They are handmade in the USA and it shows. Quality components throughout 9
Performance These jigs perform as well even when the bite is tough. They have the right profile to navigate tight structure, sit properly, and the living rubber and puff just gets bit! 9.5
Price Not the cheapest jig but reasonably priced when you consider the build components and quality. The use of a proprietary head molded around a quality Gamakatsu hook helps set this jig apart, as does the excellent hand tying. 8
Features At the core of this jig is the hand poured jighead which features an excellent hook, weedguard, and four barb keeper. This looks and feels like a custom jig and I like the fact it is made in the USA 8.5
Design (Ergonomics) Easy to fish year round yet has the features that make it a very technical bait if you spend the time to learn to when and how to finesse this jig and pair it with different trailers 8.5
Application After fishing the Bass Union finesse jigs for two seasons they have cemented themselves as my go to rubber skirted finesse jig. They can get through tight structure, get bit in clear and cold water conditions, and even though they are small can easily hold up to big largemouth or mean spots. They hold up well over time and can be effective year round 9

Pluses and Minuses:

Plus

Minus
+ A very high quality build with custom jigheads and Gamakatsu hooks. Jigheads are also weight stamped for easy identification - Jigheads are not tungsten
+ Hand tied living rubber skirts that look great in the water and still moves well in colder conditions - Living rubber skirting looks great but doesn't have the variety or flash of silicon
+ 4 Barb keeper does a great job keeping both small and large trailers in place
+ Performs very well in tough conditions
+ Handmade in the USA
+ Reasonable price considering the quality
+ Great overall durability, twice bakes powder coated heads and quality hook hold up well

When the bite is tough these jigs deliver, and while I often turn to them in cooler months they are also effective year round and excel in conditions where a smaller jig can better navigate the terrain

Conclusion: With so many quality jigs on the market, it can be difficult to pinpoint what makes one stand out over another. For me, it comes down to three key factors: build quality, effectiveness in catching fish, and long-term durability. Bass Union finesse jigs check all these boxes, featuring a high-quality handmade build, proven performance in cold water and tough conditions, and a well-poured, coated jighead with a sharp, durable hook that holds up fish after fish.

A jig fish caught on a cool morning in 2025. On days when only drop shot seemed to work these jigs delivered the best fish of the day for me

Beyond their solid construction and reasonable price, what truly sets Bass Union finesse jigs apart is their versatility. These jigs have delivered exceptional results for me across a variety of fisheries and challenging conditions. Whether fishing cold, clear, murky, shallow, or deep water, their compact profile allows them to navigate through structure and cover with minimal snagging, making them an excellent choice for cover-rich environments.

Finesse jig fishing is not only fun with the right setup, but adapting with a quality jig like the Bass Union can yield some great fish on even the toughest days

There’s nothing quite like feeling that subtle tick of a jig bite in winter, but while these jigs excel in tough bites, they’re equally effective anytime bass are relating to bottom structure. With their thoughtful design, adaptability, and ease of use, Bass Union finesse jigs are a valuable addition to any angler’s arsenal, whether you’re a seasoned jig fisherman or just starting to refine your technique. They may not be the cheapest jigs on the market, but when it comes to finesse and durability, they stand out as a top-tier option and my personal go-to. If you are looking to step up your winter or year round jig fishing game the Bass Union finesse jigs are the real deal.
