A Reel that Fishes Above Its Price Point : ARK Fishing's Gravity 1

Date: 1/29/26
Tackle Type: Reel
Manufacturer: ARK Fishing
Reviewer: Cal

Total Score: 7.58 - GOOD

Introduction:
On the list of fishing tackle manufacturers dedicated to bringing anglers value driven product, ARK Fishing International has got to be at or near the very top. Since their ICAST 2017 debut, ARK Fishing has been going full tilt building rods with impressive specs well below retail cost of other rods built with comparable blank and component specifications. Then, two years ago, they made an aggressive move into the casting reel market with their Gravity 3, 5, and 7 casting reels. Last year, in a brief departure from their usual focus, ARK Fishing introduced their flagship Gravity 8 casting reel at $279.99. This year, they've refocused on their roots with a new entry level casting reel priced at just $79.99. Here's our look at ARK Fishing International's Gravity 1.

Introducing ARK Fishing International's Gravity 1 casting reel

Impressions: As with most reels at this price point, ARK Fishing International's Gravity 1 (G1), is made with a graphite frame, and a minimal bearing count (4+1). Popping open the sideplate reveals a familiar, simple, yet effective, magnetic braking system, similar to the one found in one of the OG Gravity reels, the G3. Mind you, this is "OG" by ARK Fishing standards because their gravity reels only debuted two years ago.

The Gravity 1 features a black, satin-like finish with an aluminum handle

Taking a look at the G1, we find a reel with a black, satin-like finish, an aluminum handle, with thin, comfortable (non-EVA) knobs, and a stylish dragstar. The reel's spool is solid (no ports) with a through shaft design, and weighing in at sixteen grams (16g). The G1 is, as one might expect for the price point, relatively bare bones, but still not necessarily cheap in feel or appearance.

Brakes are adjustable via this dial on the non-handle sideplate

Real World Tests: I matched the G1 up with ARK's refreshed Brandon Cobb series BC-74HFC Flippy Floppy, a seven foot, five inch (7'-5") heavy powered stick, and spooled it with 65lb Seaguar Smackdown for some action on the California Delta and other bassy waters here in Northern California.

Ready for action

Inside we find a familiar, simple, and reliable braking system

Casting: Armed with a simple, and reliable magnetic braking system, ARK's Gravity 1 casting reel delivers predictable performance casting and pitching baits from about three eighths of an ounce on up. The dial located on the non-handle sideplate makes it easy to adjust the brakes to the desired and necessary resistance. Brakes like this just work and are likely the easiest for a manufacturer to implement which is why we see them in the majority of the more affordable reel platforms.

The reel's spool is solid, not ported

Retrieve: Click that eighty eight millimeter (88mm) handle over to engage the spool and we discover more familiar and reliable performance. ARK equips the Gravity one with a six point four to one (6.4:1) retrieve ratio which, based on the inside and outside diameter of the spool, delivers approximately fifteen and a half to twenty five inches of retrieval per turn of the handle. Obviously, the more line you have out, the slower initial retrieve will be.

The Gravity 1 is only available in a 6.4:1 retrieve ratio (at least at the time of this writing)

Connected to that handle, through the brass drive shaft is a brass gear that feels pretty smooth. Honestly, I didn't really have to give it a second thought. Even with plastic bushings under the knobs, instead of bearings, I was quite satisfied with how the Gravity one felt during the retrieve.

The handle measures, from center of knob to center of knob, 88mm

It features a swept design and very comfortable, thin knobs

Next: Power and Drag Performance
