Introduction:
The most distinguishing factor between a value priced fishing rod and one that is priced at a premium is the rod's fit and finish. Higher end products in general, carry with them a certain degree of refinement and this factor is especially true with fishing rods. It's surprising the differences you can find in something so seemingly simple as a fishing rod. Abu Garcia does a really nice job with their lineup of rods from the budget minded Vengeance and Vendetta through the medium priced Vendetta, but step up to the Fantasista Premier and it's obvious we're looking at a different class of rods. Today we take a closer look at one of the FNPC70-6 in Abu Garcia's Fantasista Premier line.

Impressions: What makes a higher end rod feel as such? Well, with most, you can tell right when you lift the rod out of the rack. Does it float into your hand or is it feel somewhat sluggish even just picking it up? We're only talking about a difference in ounces and sometimes fractions of an ounce, but higher end sticks have a certain levity about them that's very apparent in the FNPC70-6, a seven foot (7'-0"), medium heavy powered fishing rod.

Abu Garcia does not market the blank's graphite content, but they are quick to point out they are making use of 3M's Powerlux 500 resin system.

Overall, this rod isn't super light, weighing in at 5.3 ounces, but its balance makes it feel light and lively in your hand. The FNPC70-6's blank is lightly sanded to take just a little bit of the roughness out of the blank, but the surface is not taken down to a super smooth finish giving the rod a kind of raw, ready to be put to work feel. It's built up with a split rear grip, no foregrip design using a reel seat of Abu Garcia's own design but built by Fuji. Guides are stainless steel framed with zirconium inserts.

The Fantasista Premier line is a middle to high end series.

Real World Tests: I paired the Fantastista Premier FNPC70-6 with a couple of different reels during its tests including a Shimano Metanium MGL and the Scorpion 71 both spooled with fluorocarbon line from either Seaguar or Sunline.

Matched here with a Shimano Metanium MGL.

The blank is lightly sanded and guides are ss frames with zirconium inserts.

Casting: The FNPC70-6 is rated as a medium heavy powered rod with a fast taper that feels more like a heavy powered stick. It's the type of rod you'd reach for if you wanted something dedicated for fishing jigs, soft plastics, and other vertical presentation baits. As such it's a stick that feels much more at home with pitching presentations than casting, but of course it's fine in either scenario.

The underside has a large opening.
