Introduction: Following on the heels of our Revo SX review in the midst of our High Speed Reel Shootout, I got wind of a limited edition, JDM version of the Revo Elite in Japan, the Revo Elite Aurora. Jun at JapanTackle had just received shipment of these reels and when informed of their availability, I did hesitate because of our lousy exchange rate, but ten seconds later I was composing my response to have them send it my way. Though too late to take the Revo SX’s place in our shootout, it’s never too late to take a look at a new fishing reel. Presenting the Limited Edition, 2009 Abu Garcia Revo Elite Aurora.

Well, the first thing anyone familiar with the USDM reel market is going to say upon inspection of the Revo Elite Aurora is the finish on this reel resembles a Quantum. There’s no denying this fact but there’s also no denying the finish looks great on this reel.

The Revo Elite Series is Japan's equivalent of the Revo Premiere marketed in North America.

So what is the Revo Elite? This is the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) version of the Abu Revo Premier, Abu Garcia’s top end, low profile baitcasting reel. The Aurora is a limited edition interpretation of the Elite ala what Skeet Reese did with the STX last year. Following this new tradition of limited reels designed by noteworthy pros, Abu Garcia teamed with Japanese bass fishing legend and lure designer extraordinaire Katsutaka Imae. This reel has his custom touches that just really amount to the finish, handle and dragstar design, and retrieve ratio.

The Revo Elite Aurora is tuned by Katsutaka Imae of Imakatsu and bears his signature on the outside.

The Revo Elite, non-limited edition reel is based off the USDM Revo Premier but instead of 6 HPCR bearings, the Elite is specified with 9 (in 2010, Abu will be upgrading the Premier to 9 HPCR bearings as well). All other specifications are roughly the same. There is also a Revo Elite CB in Japan that features centrifugal brakes instead of linear mag.

Abu borrows the finish for the Aurora from Quantum.

So what did K.Imae do with the Aurora? He had Abu bump the retrieve ratio from 6.4:1 to 7.1:1, specified a corrosion resistant titanium deposition coating, designed a Daiwa-esque swept handle and dragstar, and had Abu custom build some custom EVA knobs. He’s also having Abu ship these reels with a custom fitted neoprene cover.

Specifications for this reel are stamped all over the exterior...

Of course, in keeping with the tradition of the JDM limited edition reels, the Revo Elite Aurora comes at the hefty price tag of roughly four hundred seventy five dollars ($475) as opposed to the standard Elite that retails for roughly three hundred twenty nine dollars ($329). The 2010 USDM Abu Garcia Premier will retail for two hundred eighty dollars ($280) and feature a similar swept handle and dragstar to the Aurora along with EVA knobs though these knobs will have a different shape.

...along with inspirational phrases.
