Introduction: Shimano is starting the new year strong with major
product launches, including the latest iteration of their flagship baitcaster,
the Antares. Additionally, the Tranx series has received a significant upgrade,
now featuring a more compact and rigid CoreSolid design.

One week into the new year and
Shimano showing it means business with an update to their halo reel. Meet the
new Antares 100 B
A New Star: Originally introduced in
1998, the first Antares was named after the first-magnitude star in the
constellation Scorpius, symbolizing Shimano's ultimate flagship reel. Since its
debut, the Antares lineup has been continually refined, maintaining its hallmark
metallic body and finish- designed to be as visually stunning as it is
functional.

This new Antares is instantly
recognizable yet more aggressive and futuristic in design
Over the years, models such as the 2006 Antares
DC, the 2018 JDM Antares DC MD XG, and the lightweight Antares 70 have achieved
near-legendary status. These reels are not only cherished by collectors but also
prized by anglers seeking the pinnacle of baitcasting performance and
refinement.

No screws anywhere to be seen
This season, Shimano is expanding the Antares
legacy with the introduction of the Antares 100B, the flagship reel in their
non-DC baitcasting lineup. At the heart of this new model is Shimano’s advanced
MGL Spool IV, a lightweight design with very low startup inertia. Engineered
with a reverse taper, the spool enhances line winding precision, delivers
superior balance, with the goal of smoother, more controlled casts.

Externally adjustable SVS Infinity
braking system
Optimized for maximum castability, the SVS
Infinity system leverages reliable centrifugal force to dynamically apply just
the right amount of braking based on spool rotation speed. This precision
reduces backlashes and enhances performance, especially when casting lightweight
baits.

The Antares 100 B features the MGL
Spool IV which has a reverse taper design to improve line winding and reduce
spool vibration due to uneven winds
Anglers will instantly recognize the Antares'
signature sleek metallic frame, but the new form factor elevates the sculpted
design to an entirely new level. One notable example is the side plate, which
now features a more pronounced overhang at the front, seamlessly blending into
the handle assembly. The design evokes the look of an enlarged wheel well on a
high-performance sports car, adding both style and function. It’s undeniably
striking and, dare I say, downright sexy. Well played Shimano.

The Antares also gets a new clutch
design
The new form-factor is designed to be extremely
comfortable to palm and inside the sleek, compact body of the Antares 100 B
there have also been enhancements including a redesigned clutch that provides
better access and even more precise engagement. Lines are protected with a
smooth Cross Carbon Drag, and MicroModule gearing is fitted for a smooth
reeling, even under pressure.

The Shimano Antares 100 B will retail for $550 and
be available in both right and left hand retrieve with 7.4:1 and 7.8:1 gear
ratios. It is interesting that the two options are so close in ratio, and all
variations will weigh in at a light 7.6 ounces, which is actually .2 ounces
lighted that the Antares 70. The Antares 100 B will be available for pre-order
from some retailers today and should start shipping in mid April, just in time
for Spring season.

The new Tranx features a more
compact design...
More Power: While the Antares prioritizes
refinement, Shimano is also introducing the new Tranx 300, specifically designed
for power fishing and big-bait applications. The standout upgrade in this
generation is the addition of CoreSolid technology, which integrates the frame,
outer side plate, and level wind guard into a single aluminum piece. This
innovation is a natural fit for a series built to deliver strong winding power.

...due to the one piece CoreSolid
construction. Finally a CoreSolid big bait reel!
Not only do the new reels look more compact they
deliver much more rigidity and power to do battle with larger freshwater and
saltwater fish. The Tranx 300 B incorporates SVS Infinity MD for precise casting
control through an external brake dial along with MicroModule gearing for more
cranking power and smoothness.

The Tranx 300B features a large
gearbox with Micro Module gearing and SVS Infinity MD Tune casting support
Since this reel will also be used for inshore and
saltwater applications it also is equipped with other premium features like
X-Ship, which provides the pinion gear with double bearing support for better
alignment and durability, and a Cross Carbon Drag system that offers a wide
range of adjustability and plenty of fish-stopping power. Casting control is
managed by the SVS Infinity MD Tune system, while corrosion-resistant S A-RB
bearings enhance durability and reliability. Though bass swimbait anglers will
undoubtedly appreciate this reel, it’s been engineered with the ruggedness to
handle species ranging from muskies to tarpon, thanks to its tank-like
construction.

The Tranx 300 lineup includes a 5.8:1 power
retrieve option and a brisk 7.6:1 gear ratio for techniques requiring faster
lure action. The 300 and 301 models feature a traditional double-paddle handle,
while the HG models are equipped with a larger Power Handle for added cranking
power. All four Tranx 300 B reels are priced at a competitive $299 and are set
to start shipping later this month.

The new Antares is super sleek but
the most interesting thing about this new reel is the updated MGL spool. Shimano
continues to show it cares about the high end market
Our Quick Take: Shimano is kicking
off the year with major launches on both the reel and rod fronts, but none are
as eye-catching as the futuristic Antares 100B. This new halo reel retains the
signature metallic aesthetics of its predecessors while embracing a sleeker,
more modern design and updated features that elevate its refinement. Equipped
with the MGL IV spool, the Antares 100B promises to be the most polished non-DC
Shimano baitcaster yet. We're particularly eager to experience the newly
designed clutch in action.

While not as sexy as the Antares
the Tranx 300 B is every bit as exciting for big bait and big fish applications
with the CoreSolid design
