Introduction: Scientific Anglers has introduced a new tippet and
tippet spool system which is designed with a number of added value features.
Tippet may seem like a very simple component but the team at S.A. have taken
things to the next level with the great detail in design that we have come to
expect from this manufacturer.
Meet Scientific Anglers new tippet
and tippet spool system
The new tippet is available in three types
including Freshwater nylon, Saltwater hard mono and Fluorocarbon. All of these
come on new color coded spools for easy identification, green for freshwater,
blue for saltwater and orange for fluorocarbon. The spools are also translucent
so anglers can now see exactly how much material is left on the spool, and to
ensure that the material does not degenerate from UV exposure the spools are
molded with UV inhibitors.
The tippet is available in three
types including freshwater (shown), saltwater and fluorocarbon
The tippet is available in a wide range of sizes
ranging from 0X all the way up to 40lb. Anglers will notice the tippets have
excellent diameters for their breaking strength and each spool is loaded with 30
meters of material with is nearly 10% more than competing offerings.

The freshwater tippet is a proprietary nylon
polymer which is formulated for suppleness, low memory and strength. The
saltwater tippet is also nylon based and formulated for more powerful
presentations and the fluorocarbon polymer is formulated to abrasion resistance,
low visibility and excellent knot strength.
To make deployment easy a line
cutter is integrated into each spool
Scientific Anglers went a step further with the
new spools by introducing a new line management system. To make pulling the
right length of tippet both quicker and easier a built in cutter is integrated
into the edge of each spool.
What is that red hub in the
middle?
In the center of each spool anglers will find a
red colored "hub" which can be pushed outwards allowing the tippet to lock into
other spools, including some traditional tippet spools.
Press it upwards from the bottom
and spools ca now be joined
This free wheeling hub allows the new tippet spool
to spin freely when joined. When joined a simple press of the hub downwards
immediately separates all spools.
When joined the spools spin freely
on the independent hub
The spools are labeled on the outside with a new
water resistant label to prevent cracking and peeling and the elastic retainers
are also labeled for easy identification making it easy to identify the tippet
even when the spools are joined together.
The retainers are labeled for easy
identification
The retainers also have an extra tag which can be
pulled in reverse to spool the excess tippet back onto the spool. All in all
this is as good as it gets when it comes to tippet line management.
A tag end on the retainer band
makes it possible to back excess tippet back onto the spool
The new tippet spool design is clever and the fact
that the engineers at Scientific Anglers thought about details like waterproof
label material, an adjustable free spinning hub design and even a UV resistant
spool material just goes to show just how far the company is willing to go to
make fly fishing both easier and more effective. The new tipper spools are just
hitting stores now and fly fishermen ca expect both the freshwater and saltwater
tippet to retail for $4.99 per spool and the fluorocarbon to retail for $17.50
per spool.
