Manufacturer: Daiwa

Introduction:
The Ryoga is back. Few reels manage to balance old-school gravitas with modern engineering quite like Daiwa’s Ryoga round reel series. For 2026, Daiwa isn’t reinventing the Ryoga so much as sharpening it - adding more control, more refinement, and more purpose-built differentiation between sizes. The new Ryoga 150 arrives as the brawnier sibling to the refined Ryoga 100, and together the two reels are designed to be a one two punch for round reel enthusiasts.

The Ryoga is back. Daiwa's machined aluminum classic round reel returns with some modern features

Ryoga 2026: Built Like a Vault, Tuned Like a Sports Car:At first glance, the Ryoga 150 is unmistakably Ryoga: a beautifully machined, brushed aluminum round profile that looks as good on a display shelf as it does bolted to a heavy swimbait rod. But beneath the classic exterior lies Daiwa’s latest structural thinking.

The new Ryoga 150 features an oversized handle and power knobs leaning into the reel's intent as a big bait slinger

The reel is built around the company’s HYPER ARMED HOUSING, Daiwa’s marketing term for a high-precision, machine-cut aluminum frame designed to eliminate flex and keep the drivetrain aligned under load. One of the reasons that round reels are so ideal for big baits and big applications is that they are so rigid. This rigidity is an advantage in a reel intended for big baits, heavy line, and hard pulling  fish, providing a stronger platform with less flex, more torque, and smoother more refined retrieves.

Inside, Daiwa goes all-in with its HYPERDRIVE DESIGN, anchoring the new Ryoga’s performance around four key systems:

HYPERDRIVE DIGIGEAR: A 3-point contact gear design that increases surface engagement, delivering that signature Ryoga smoothness while significantly improving long-term durability.

HYPER DOUBLE SUPPORT: Full bearing support on both ends of the pinion gear for consistent alignment and friction-free rotation.

HYPER TOUGH CLUTCH: Designed for smooth, positive engagement cast after cast, even under heavy use.

All of these features are integrated into a machined frame with tightly integrated tolerances throughout, minimizing play and maximizing power transfer. On previous generation reels, like the legendary 2008 Ryoga, the result can be a winding experience that feels smooth, controlled, powerful, and confidence-inspiring - exactly what big bait anglers want when gliding oversized swimbaits or cranking deep structure.

A closer look at the Ryoga's oversized EVA barrel knobs

Purpose-Built Casting - Ryoga 100 vs. Ryoga 150: One of the most compelling aspects of the new Ryoga lineup is how clearly Daiwa defines the role of each size.

The Ryoga 100 is designed for more finesse applications and also weighs less at 9.2 ounces versus the Ryoga 150 which weighs 10.2 ounces

The Ryoga 100 continues to lean into more finesse and control like the Ryoga SV from a decade ago, utilizing an SV BOOST braking system designed to suppress line lift and maintain stable trajectories, even with high-drag baits. It’s the Ryoga for anglers who want round-reel refinement with modern SV versatility.

The Ryoga 150 features a G1 Duralumin Magforce-Z Boost LC Spool

The Ryoga 150, on the other hand, is more about power and distance with those bigger baits. It features a 36mm G1 Duralumin MAGFORCE-Z BOOST spool, optimized for medium to heavy lures. The MAG-Z BOOST system is designed to precisely rein in excessive spool acceleration at the start of the cast, stabilizing lure posture and letting baits cut through wind with authority. This is a reel built for big swimbaits, magnum crankbaits, and other high-load presentations where control and consistency matter more than feather-light startup. Daiwa’s factory-preset Zero Adjuster spool tension knob further reinforces that intent -dialed in out of the box for optimal casting without guesswork.

The Ryoga 150 is instantly recognizable yet has been beefed up with modern design, magsealed bearings, a new 36mm spool, and 100mm handles with extra large EVA knobs

Classic profile, modern components and still built like a Tank: The Ryoga 150 may look like a classic but it is built tough and comes loaded with 8+1 MAGSEALED bearings, protected by Daiwa’s magnetic oil system to keep water, salt, and debris at bay. Drag duties are handled by Daiwa’s Automatic Tournament Drag (ATD) system, delivering up to 13.2 pounds of smooth, usable pressure, complete with an audible clicker, always appreciated for both better understanding of what is happening during the fight and for the sheer fun factor. Powering everything is a 100mm handle fitted with oversized EVA knobs, helping provide leverage and comfort when pulling hard on big fish or helping bring swimbaits to life.

The Ryoga 150 will be available in one retrieve, 7.3:1, and in both right and left hand retrieve

Our Quick Take: Oh Ryoga, how we’ve missed you. While the Ryoga has come and gone over the decades, the original 2008 model still sits in very high regard. It was a benchmark for round reel excellence - delivering exceptional cranking power, impressive refinement, and a level of build quality so good it has since become a sought-after collector’s piece. The new 2026 Daiwa Ryoga 150 isn’t trying to be trendy or minimal. Instead, it feels deliberate - an instantly recognizable premium tool built for anglers who value mechanical integrity, casting control, and unmistakable classic style. Retailing for $699 and expected to begin shipping in the coming weeks, the Ryoga 150 will likely be hard to come by early on. Round reel enthusiasts have been waiting a long time for the Ryoga’s return, and from the looks of things, the new Ryoga 100, and especially the 150, are already shaping up to be classics in the making.
