Lure Review

Cashing in on the Pencil Popper with "The One" from Paycheck Baits (continued)

Features: An impromptu autopsy of The One reveals the bait has no internal harness holding the hooks together. Naturally, the bait is not weedless, but it does come in a variety of colors both solid, foiled, and ghost. Miscellaneous features worth mentioning are the feathers behind the bait's gills to mimic swim fins and the presence of plastic guards along the body in front of each hook tie to prevent the hooks from swinging forward and entangling one another.

A quick autopsy reveals The One does not feature an internal harness.

The rear hook is placed at the very back also in a position so as to avoid fouling hooks.

Design/Ergonomics: I've had a handful of baits through the years and they've all performed very well out of the box. The bait's weight of one ounce is very easy to fish (with the right stick) and its realism, while floating on the surface of the water, is enhanced with those little faux-pectoral fins behind the gills. As far as we know, there is only one available size.

Pencil poppers are great for tempting big bass and The One is a very easy bait to cast and fish.

Trieda, Amazon Wolf Fish, loved chewing on The One.

Application: Despite the popularity of pencil popping baits for striped bass, I've only fished this bait in pursuit of largemouth. I wanted to take it for one more trip to Brazil in pursuit of some Amazon species, but planned trips over the last two years have not panned out due to adverse water conditions. This bait is as versatile as you want it to be when it comes to a topwater bait for a variety of species although the hardware should be upgraded for anything stronger than a largemouth bass.

And yes, Peacock Bass chew on this bait too! The One is Amazon Certified!

Pluses and Minuses:

Plus

Minus
+ Really easy bait to cast - Hardware could be a bit more stout
+ Easy bait to work - No internal harness for truly mean spirited fish
+ Good variety of finishes

If you're looking for a topwater bait to change things up, Paycheck Baits has "The One"

Conclusion: Pencil poppers are great baits for big bass and The One from Paycheck Baits is sized right for largemouth - it's not too big to cast on a standard heavy powered rod, and it's not so small where you lose interest in working it all day long. The bonus comes when you swing to cast this lure - it really flies! If you're looking for a topwater bait to change things up, Paycheck Baits has "The One".
