ORCA Lights Up the Premium Cooler Market

Date: 8/12/13
Location: Las Vegas, NV
Admission: Buyers & Press Only
Manufacturer: ORCA
Reviewer: Zander

Introduction:
When I think premium coolers the first name that usually comes to mind is Yeti, a company that has built up a strong following among guides and hardcore anglers on both coasts, but if there was one thing that was clear at ICAST was there is a lot of competition in the premium cooler market. Unlike traditional run of the mill coolers these purpose built offerings are designed to keep ice longer, survive the toughest situations, and are built with extremely rugged features.

ORCA manufactures premium coolers for anglers

“ORCA” is short for Outdoor Recreation Company of America and manufactures premium 100% Made-in-America coolers. The company was founded by Jim Ford and Cliff Walker, two veterans of the building industry and avid hunters and anglers. They started ORCA with the vision of producing high end outdoor products made in the USA. Today the company offers a complete range of coolers designed to go wherever you choose to. While all of the high-end cooler manufacturers highlight the ability to keep ice and contents cooler longer ORCA introduced a differentiating feature in their latest cooler.

Open this cooler up and it illuminates the interior with LEDs!

At the show they introduced what is described as the “world’s first roto-molded lighted cooler” called the LiddUp. The LiddUp features built in LED lighting that illuminates the interior of the cooler by opening the lid. This integrated lighting system requires no assembly and is powered by replaceable AA batteries. The LED lights can be swapped out with different colors and are completely sealed so they do not come in contact with water and are considered food safe. Because they are LEDs they do not generate heat there is no effect on the ice.

The LED lights can be interchanged

The LiddUp comes with all the other features the company is known for, including a lid gasket for a tight seal, extendable flex-grip handles for comfortable carrying and an easy flow drainage spout. The LiddUp has plenty of insulation for maximum cold retention and is designed to keep the freshness of stowed items for up to 10 days!

Besides LEDs the ORCA has all the usual rugged features like secure rubber latches

Bill Terry, VP of Sales, shows us the new LiddUp premium cooler

The new ORCA lighted cooler will be become available November 1st in 58, 75 and 140 quart sizes.  There will be four colors called The Blue Water (white), The Cure (pink), The Plains (beige), and The Wilderness (green). So how much will the LiddUp cost? A 75qt model will retail for $749 dollars, just what you might expect for a “premium” cooler.
