ICAST 2013 Coverage

Special Report - Abu to Bring JDM Reels Stateside!

Date: 7/11/13
Location: Las Vegas, NV
Admission: Buyers & Press Only
Manufacturer: Abu Garcia
Reviewer: Cal

Introduction:
We'd been talking to Andrew Wheeler for months prior to ICAST regarding what Abu Garcia's plans were for product introductions at this year's ICAST. We were very excited to learn about the round reel introductions and were interested to check out the new Orra series. But when we showed up at Abu's booth early Wednesday morning, Andrew had a slight grin on his face and told us there's something that turned up last minute he wanted to show us. I for one was thinking, "oh come on, let's get what we were talking about covered first and then cover the new stuff." ICAST tends to have that affect on us. But when Andrew kneeled down behind the display to open up a hidden compartment we knew something was up.

Imagine our surprise when Andrew Wheeler knelt behind the counter to pull out something special to be shared on TackleTour.com.

JDM reels coming Stateside : The big news? Abu Garcia plans to make available products being built for the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) right here in North America. The reels will be available only through select retailers (like Tackle Warehouse) and in limited quantities. Actual selection from year to year may vary as well.

The Elite aligns most closely with the USDM Premiere.

Revo Elite: The Elite is Abu Garcia's top end offering in Japan. It is similar to the Premiere here in the states save for the shallower spool and different brake array within their IVCB system. This reel is available in a 7.1:1 and 8.0:1 in both left and right hand retrieve. MSRP is $379.

The Revo Elite's spool is drilled for the ultimate in weight reduction..

The IVCB system for Japan Market reels features six brake arms.

Revo LTX: The Revo LTX is similar to the USDM MGX except taken to another level in terms of finesse fishing. The LTX features a super shallow spool and a MagTrax braking system instead of the IVCB. This reel will retail for $329 in the US market.

Here comes the LTX.

Consumers in tune with the JDM market will understand this super shallow spool - others may not.

Revo ALT: The ALT features an aluminum alloy frame with carbon sideplates, an Infini II spool and an IVCB-IV braking system. It is made in one retrieve ratio of 6.4:1, and will be available for the price point of $259.

The Revo ALT is Abu Garcia Japan's workhorse reel.

With a 9.0:1 retrieve ratio!

Conclusion: Abu Garcia proves that manufacturers pay attention to our site and the madness that goes on in our discussion forums. It is because of our readers and their adamant affection for all things JDM that Abu Garcia is offering this new JDM program through select retailers. Once these reels arrive (expected in September 2013) you better act quickly and decisively because if you don't, supplies can run out and you'll be stuck wishing you had once more.
