Event Article: 2008 ICAST Show - Las Vegas, NV

Patience can be a Virtue, but Beware Jackall's Poison and new lures

Date: 7/19/08
Location: Las Vegas, NV
Manufacturer: Jackall
Reviewer: Team TackleTour

Introduction: Last year, while touring the Jackall booth at ICAST, Curt Arakawa, showed us some sticks that he requested we keep quiet until they were able to finalize some remaining details on how and when to bring them over from Japan. That process took an entire year to complete but now the wait is finally over. Presenting Jackall's Poison rod lineup for North America!

Remember this photo from last year's ICAST coverage? The caption red: "Curt, Ty, and David of Jackall shows the TT team all the new lures and rods

The TackleTour readership appears perpetually starved for news from the overseas market - especially when that news surrounds Japanese fishing rods and reels. Jackall must have known this for why else would they go through a year long process to make these sticks available to us domestically?

Now that we know they are coming, the natural question is, which rods will Jackall be shipping to tempt our wallets? Well, how about their entire 2009 Poison lineup of sticks? That's right, we expect to see all nine Jackall Poison rods land on North American soil in the not too distant future.

Welcome to North America, here is the Jackall Poison Delta Spec

This heavy duty rod features a traditional, full grip assembly...

The next natural question is price. Each of the nine Poison sticks will retail for $450 and come with a three year limited warranty. Components are what we come to expect with a Japanese designed rod that being Fuji Ti framed SiC guides and reel seat.

... with non-traditional detailing.

Jackall makes use of the Fuji ACS reel seat in particular, in their casting rods and has them coated with a soft, rubber material to provide a more comfortable grip. The looks, of course, are very JDM.

The Rush Burn is another heavy duty stick rated up to 1 1/4 ounce lures...

... but of course, that's not why Cal picked it up...

So, what's special in this lineup? A few sticks grabbed our attention. The first was their 6'8" composite glass cranking stick. Zander almost slipped this into our roller case to take home, unfortunately, it's not a multi-piece stick, so we'll have to wait for another opportunity. This rod feels more graphite than glass yet the blend is 49/51 in favor of glass - just about spilt right down the middle. Cranking enthusiasts will be pleased.

Another stick to garner our attention was the 7'3" Delta Spec. This is an extra-extra heavy stick rated for baits up to two ounces, but more importantly, rated for braided line to sixty pounds. Can you say frog stick? This rod is a beast.

The Jackall composite cranking sticks feature an attractive, dark brown blank

We had to pry this stick out of Zander's hands for photographs

Over on the spinning side of the rack, Curt pulled out a 6'2" solid graphite rod titled Competist XF that promises to be the finesse fisherman's dream stick. The solid graphite composition allows Jackall to make this rod's blank super thin and with that thin, solid construction comes what feels like an incredibly sensitive rod.

The Competist XF is a solid graphite finesse spinning rod

Rated to only 5lb test line, it is a true finesse spinning rod feeling much more like an Ultra Light stick than a Light powered rod, but, thanks again to the unique blank construction, this stick feels like it has some muscle if and when it will be needed.

Detailing on the Competist XF's grip is exquisite

Detailing on the Competist XF is equally impressive with a combination cork and EVA grip reminiscent of another JDM giant and we welcome the competition.

Each rod will come with its own custom rod sleeve

Of course, a JDM stick would not be very JDM if it did not come with a custom rod sleeve. Each Jackall Poison stick also features this, almost mandatory accessory. Made of a soft neoprene fabric, it's a welcome, protective accompaniment on a $450 rod.
