Rod Review

Casting with Veracity : Abu Garcia's VRCTY79-9 (continued)

Design & Ergonomics: The VRCTYC78-7's lab results fall pretty closely in line with our historical average for sticks we determined to be good all purpose type candidates in the specialty area of fishing big baits. The rod's stated line and lure ratings are spot on and it fishes extremely well when these guidelines are adhered to. What I enjoy about this stick is its old school full rear grip. While there are those who would prefer the handle material were cork, what I appreciate with a big bait stick is having that full handle and some padding on the blank when the handle is locked under my forearm.

Guides are stainless steel frames with Zirconium inserts

While not my color per-se, the red paint on the rod's blank is very nice

If there's something I'm less thrilled about with this stick in terms of design and ergonomics, it's the color of the blank. The fact it matches the reel for which I purchased the rod is a saving grace. Otherwise, it's not my first choice in color, however, this is an entirely subjective criticism and not an aspect that is actually scored.

What does help with the VRCTYC79-7's score is the fact it is outfitted with a very comfortable reel seat and a decent set of guides.

The often overlooked hook hangar

Price & Applications: Abu Garcia positions Veracity just under their top end Fantasista Premier with a price range from $199.95 to $249.99 depending on the model. The VRCTYC79-7, of course, is priced at the top end of this range at $249.99. It is an excellent choice for tossing swimbaits in its specified lure rating but would also do well in the role of working larger topwater baits like Megabass's Mega Dog or the good ole reliable Black Dog Baits Lunker Punker. This stick would also do well in the role of pulling some of those L.O.U.S. deep cranks like Strike King's 10XD and Lucky Craft's SKT Magnum series of baits.

The VRCTYC79-7 retails for $249.99

Pluses and Minuses:

Plus

Minus
+ Fun rod with which to cast - Only real downside for me, and it's a minor one, is the somewhat polarizing color scheme
+ Smooth power curve
+ Full rear grip is comfy

If you're looking for a slightly higher end stick with which to toss a variety of larger sized baits, Abu Garcia's VRCTYC79-7 belongs on your shortlist

Conclusion: It's funny sometimes how you grow to like a certain piece of equipment. My selection of this stick was really more as something to compliment my Revo Beast Rocket. Reading the rod's specifications, I figured it'd make a nice choice in support of that reel tossing bigger baits. After about the first or second cast with the combo, it vaulted up in priority for review because I really enjoyed the way the VRCTYC79-7 handled. Without much breaking in period, I was placing baits where I wanted and when that eventual strike or two came, hookups were easy and efficient. The rod's behavior under battle reminded me of some of my favorite cranking rods but with more overall power. If you're looking for a slightly higher end stick with which to toss a variety of larger sized baits, Abu Garcia's VRCTYC79-7 belongs on your shortlist.
