Reel Review

Unleashing Abu Garcia's Original REVO Beast (continued)

Features: The REVO Beast comes with the afore mentioned externally adjustable brake dial, one bearing on the levelwind, a bearing and bushing in each knob, micro-click enabled dragstar and spool tension knob, no reel cover, and a vial of oil in the box. Abu Garcia's REVO suite always does well in out standard checklist of features.

The 95mm handle provides really nice leverage.

There is one bearing and one bushing per knob.

Design & Ergonomics: The REVO Beasts's handle is a very comfortable length to use but the oversized knobs, while easy to find and very secure to grasp when cranking, I find just too big. They're probably more suited for saltwater applications or extreme conditions where you need to wear gloves to keep your hands warm. In fact, these oversized knobs would be a really nice benefit if your fingers were shrouded in a pair of gloves.

The Beast's gear box is oversized, but not overdone.

The Beast's size is the same as the majority of its REVO siblings, so it's very easy and comfortable to palm all day. There are anglers who complain about the REVO suite's oversized gearbox, but It's never been a discomfort to me. What I found odd with this reel is that while it weighs 9.3 ounces, it's weight somehow does not bother me. I very much prefer baitcasting reels that are right around seven ounces or under, but the majority of this reel's weight is on the handle side and somehow, that makes it feel less heavy than it really is.

I found the oversized knobs disproportionate to the size of the reel.

The REVO Beast breaks down in typical fashion with three screws holding the handle sideplate in place. Two of these screws are on the outside of the reel, while a third is hidden under the spool, so you do have to be a little careful turning the reel over and not letting everything fall open when you release the last screw. We had no issues with reassembly either.

To remove the non-handle sideplate, unscrew this spring loaded bar.

Then flip the sideplate up and remove it.

Application: Thanks to this reel's deep spool and therefore, larger than normal line capacity, it's useful for many more species than just black bass. With its super long handle, durable gear system, and powerful drag, it'd make a great reel for the Amazon, or in pursuit of pike and musky in the Mid-West, or in salty environments for any number of inshore species.

The REVO Beast sits super low on the reel seat.

For bass specifically, it's a really good, heavy duty, general purpose reel for use in any occasion where it's faster than normal retrieve ratio is needed. Although retrieve ratios in the 7's are quickly becoming the new 6. The only thing this reel wouldn't be a good choice for is finesse applications.

Looking for a good, heavy duty, general purpose reel? The Beast is it.

Pluses and Minuses:

Plus

Minus
+ Comfortable size to palm - Not as buttery smooth as I had hoped
+ Good Power - Knobs are overkill on such a small reel
+ Nice, long handle
+ Really cool finish on the sideplates

Looking for a solidly built reel with brass gears instead of aluminum? Put the REVO Beast on your radar.

Conclusion: Abu Garcia's "Beast" build has taken on an identity all its own since the introduction of this original back in 2014. The recently reviewed Toro Beast is very worthy of this designation so maybe I was expecting too much out of the original. Don't get me wrong, the REVO Beast is just about everything Abu promises - it's a strong, solid, and powerful reel. I was just expecting something a bit more refined in overall feel. Personal feelings aside, the REVO Beast scored well in our ratings system, so if you're looking for a solidly built reel with brass instead of aluminum gears, you need to put the REVO Beast on your radar.
